“not worth the $”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2012

Stayed one night with my husband & 2 daughters because we were longing for the ocean, and SS was the only hotel on a beach we could find. The room had been described as having a "bay window," roomy enough for 4 by someone who answered the phone. In reality the room, tho it did have a lovely view of the ocean, was small, not so clean, no bay window--only a modest sliding window facing the water. Would have been fine if it had been reasonably-priced, but it was over $300.00 for the night. Includes one bar of soap and one small tube of shampoo. As others have mentioned half the small, blocked-off SS beach is dug up, an eyesore that reduces the beach by 50%, a fact not mentioned when we called to reserve. Only positives were the friendly people at the front desk, and the great coffee and Mr Coffee machine for the morning. Had dinner just down the street at the Pleasant View, which is where we will stay next time--clean, modern, so much more pleasant.

Room Tip: View is best on the 2nd floor

“Construction or DEstruction?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2012

Notice of property construction on the website was misleading. You go to an ocean front hotel to enjoy the private beach on the Atlantic.

What we found here is a dug up deconstructed private beach.

Exactly half of their tiny 200ft X 200ft beach was dug up and on hold for future a new deck/pavilion. Their ONLY amenity the beach, guests were clustered and crammed beyond the piles of dirt on half of a beach that was on an uncomfortable pitched toward the ocean.

This we found unacceptable, decided to cut our stay short and 10am next day during check out and was told by the receptionist that policy was we checked in so our reservation has been activated and they most likely cannot return the one night cost we chose to skip. I felt to be fair they should treat it as a late cancellation and charge me the one nights stay (per policy).

Oddly upon leaving this receptionist charged my credit card 2 TIMES for that one night.
IN ALL :
I had ALSO paid for one night a month in advance - for a GRAND TOTAL of 945.81.

A call next Monday returned no results, not even the manager would get on the phone. The impression here is: complain and we'll charge you double. Dispute the charge and do not return. How nice.

Been here 3 times before in the past 3 years without a complaint or a problem, the beach was fine and why we liked to come, even touted it to others. No more. Some things change quickly.

The character of management is tested when guests are displeased. They flunked. Ruthless is an understatement to describe management. They have underscored that here, and highlighted it with the high turnover of personnel in housekeeping and security.

I am responding to this review to inform guests that have less than pleasant experiences to direct all concerns to the owner and property manager. Regretfully, I have resigned from my position with the Sandy Shore Motel, Westerly, Rhode Island. It has been a pleasure meeting each and everyone of you in my tenure. I wish you all many happy days of travels and maybe our paths may cross again.

“Misleading, Not customer friendly”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

If you book on the weekend please reconsider. This is not a customer oriented place and that’s an understatement. My sister and I booked our reservations from Friday night to Monday morning. Upon check in we were practically sexually harassed by the overnight security guard. We were with our elderly father so it was awkward. Then we see the massive constructive mound blocking the beach entrance. So not only does it take away for the ocean view it made the private beach smaller and you have to climb over it to get back and forth from the beach to the hotel. Then there is not enough patio tables to go around so the overnight security guard tells us if you want one steal one from someone else. What’s more he blatantly told us that we were not entitled to privacy directly outside our door or window. Never mind being provided our own patio area with a ocean view. Basically it’s a free for all. Anyone can pull up a table directly outside your room to hangout and be loud as they want all night. This is likely to happen and did to us since not all rooms directly face the ocean like the website implies. The bottom line is that Sandy Shore is meant for place to crash and burn for a night. It is not a place to a plan a vacation and make reservations at. It is certainly not family oriented at least not on the weekend. There is no quiet time after 10pm. The rooms are lacking. And your car may be marked up by other cars that it’s barricaded by. In sum, once they have your money you are at their mercy. And if you don’t like it you are threatened to be kicked out or arrested. I would have had a better stay at a motel six. Please if your desire is to stay on the beach consider anywhere else before you fork over more than a thousand dollars!!!!

We were approved earlier this year to build a restaurant that we feel would be a great added amenity to offer our guests. Constructions was not executed as planned and unfortunately had to stop due to the approaching season and wanting to better serve our guests. Even though some of our beach has been re-constructed, we make sure our property is safe for all our guests and most certainly have clear paths to access our beach.

An incident report filed by our security staff disagrees with some of the guests statements. The guests were heavily intoxicated throughout their entire stay with us, and appeared as though their judgment was impaired tremendously due to the reports from our security and office staff. We received several complaints from other guests who were occupying the surrounding rooms. They stated that vulgar language and a threatening tone were used against them. Our office staff had to relocate a family to another hotel room on our property due to these specific guests. Two Westerly Police Department Officers were also on premise when these incidents were taking place. We reserve all rights to evict any of our guests if we feel that they pose a threat to any of our other guests and/or staff. Our guests are our number one concern; so again, we apologize if you felt threatened that we would evict you from our property. We are only trying to follow policy and procedures.

“A very nice surprise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2012 via mobile

We showed up with three very young children and no reservation. The check in was flawless and we were provided an apartment with kitchen, two double beds and a pullout couch. The motel was directly on the ocean so beach access was included. Easy access to plenty of restaurants and convenience stores. In the heart of it all.

“We love Sandy Shore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2012

We stayed at Sandy Shore a handful of times last summer and cannot say enough what a great place to be on a beautiful Summer day!! The office staff was wonderful especially Sharon!!! The rooms are very spacious and clean and the best part is sitting on your Private beach with your own life guard while the surrounding hotels are squished like sardines on their beach !! I'm heading up there this Friday - Monday with my girlfriends and the kids and we can't get there fast enough , I'm looking forward to a slice of heaven at Sandy Shore!!! Highly recommend this great beach front property!!!
