“Relocated here because of Best Western's overbooking!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2011

Room smelled of mold and mildew. Air conditioner was too loud. Out dated and old furnishings. The most unfriendly people at the desk. The bartender was accommodating. This was not our CONFIRMED hotel. We were relocated here at our expense because the Best Western had "water issuses" with some of their rooms. We later found out that the Best Western had overbooked and there was no "room damages" at there hotel. Would not stay at a Ramada or Best Western affiliate EVER!

There is no description except totally horrible and extremely dated. The hotel was a recommendation on a website for a wedding we were attending in Newport. The rooms were dreary, walls badly in need of painting. stained rugs, no headboards on the beds. To make matters worse, the room had spiders and ants.

We left the room at 9:00 a.m. and returned at 3:30 p.m. to find that housekeeping had not gotten around to cleaning the room. We complained and attempted to find another hotel, but because it was Jazz Festival weekend, there were no rooms available.. We had no choice but to stay. I The person in charge was extremely apologetic and acknowledged that my complaints were valid.

We were very surprised to find the conditions to be as unacceptable as they were, especially since the hotel was recently taken over by the Ramada Chain. I have read some of the other reviews and cannot believe that other travellers found this to be a nice hotel.

The room was clean and large, but could use some updating. The on-site bar and restaurant staff were great. We also used the shuttle to downtown, it was very convenient.

We just returned from our stay at the Royal Plaza...Now a Ramada. We went to Newport for a wedding and this was one of the properties suggested by the bride. After reading some of the reviews I must confess I was a little nervous....but knowing the bride I felt that she would not steer us wrong...and she didn't. This was a very nice property. I do not know what the other rooms looked like but ours was VERY clean, old yes, but the paint was fresh, the rug was clean, the bed was comfortable, the towels were large and soft, the staff was pleasant.
It is not the Hyatt, so if that is the level of hotel you are looking for this is not the place for you. That being said It also is not the price of the Hyatt either.
I would recommend this as a nice place for a short stay while in the Newport area.

We just left, thankfully for another hotel. We've taken over 20 photos and will contact the new management-Ramada. Clearly the room had water damage given the overwhelming musty smell. First was the little bug on the bed when we pulled back the comforter. The worst was half the side of the dresser was covered in old mold as well as black sooty mold in the bottom drawers with tiny bugs. A hole in the bathroom door, a door handle falling apart, brown goop dripping down the wall, and back to the awful smell. Everything is outdated from the ancient little TV, rusty metal trim in the bathroom, to the lamp that doesn't work. I asked for a manager to explain we were leaving and showed her the issues but got no response other than to have us check out as requested. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Oh, beware.

I spent two nights at the Royal Plaza while in Middletown for a funeral.
The room was spacious and clean, and the bed comfortable. The heating and coolling worked quickly. The bathroom was well appointed and modern.
It would have been nice to have an easy chair in the room with a reading lamp, but reading in bed or with the straight chair and table worked.
The staff was very helpful in giving directions and helping with planning how long it would take to get one place or another.
The restaurant served a good breakfast buffet, and I noticed that people not staying at the hotel were coming there for lunch and dinner.
The hotel is very convenient to Newport, including the beaches and mansions and the boutiques downtown. Easy to get to Logan Airport from here.

Room Tip: First floor back.

As a business traveler I don't always stay in the nicest hotels, and this is not the Ritz. However, the facilities are well above par, the rooms are clean and the food in the restaurant is quite good.
The hotel is situated in a central location, with multiple stores in very close proximity. A very friendly staff, in particular: the Front Desk clerk, Lauren, was very knowledgeable, helpful and courteous. She went well out of her way to provide excellent service.
I would recommend this hotel for an outstanding stay on a budget price.
