My fiance and I stayed one night at this Residence Inn while we were in town for a conference at the University of Rhode Island. This was about a 30 minute drive from the university, but it was an easy drive, and I believe there is only one other hotel that is significantly closer. The only bummer about the drive is a toll bridge that is $2 each way. However, the Newport area appears to be about the only populated area nearby the university, so we preferred to stay there. The hotel is about a 5 minute drive from downtown Newport (lots of stuff to do) and is within walking distance of an Applebees.
The hotel is very new (less than a year), so it is really in great condition. The best thing about it--it is extremely clean. This is important, because I am a clean freak / germ freak, and really nothing is as important to me when choosing a hotel as cleanliness. I love the peace of mind that comes with being in a clean place.
As I think is the case with all Residence Inns, there was a kitchen in the room with full size fridge, microwave, cooktop, sink, and cupboards stocked with dishes--again, everything was very clean. The continental breakfast was excellent (standard cereals, yogurt, muffins, etc. but also a waffle iron, multiple tasty hot food options, and a variety of fresh fruit). The indoor pool, workout room, bball court, and business center were all neat and tidy, although we weren't there long enough to use any of them.
The staff was uniformly very friendly and pleasant. We were upgraded from a studio suite to a 1 bedroom suite at no additional cost (just randomly), and when I asked whether they allowed late checkouts, the man at the desk offered to move us from 11AM to 1PM with a smile. (A lot of times I feel like I am causing a problem if I ask for a late checkout--not here, and I even thought they might have been accommodating if we needed later!)
Overall, we were kind of sad we were only staying here one night! It was also a great value for the price ($116 AAA rate), although this was off-season in a beach-ish area.
