“Quirky hotel in a nice location that is let down by its services”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights while visiting Rhode Island. Its location is good - tucked away in a quiet residential street about 5 -10 minutes drive into central Newport and just off the main road into town.

The rooms were fine - albeit a little dated. The staff were pretty casual, but friendly.

However I felt the hotel seemed to be a little confused about who it was targeting. It looked like a quaint boutique style hotel from the outside, yet it didn't offer some fairly basic services.

There was no laundry despite there being a laundry bag in the room (I was directed to a laundromat near Walmart).

What's described as a continental breakfast was bizarre. You tick a piece of paper in the evening, and then a muffin wrapped in cellophane, a piece of cake or a breakfast roll is delivered to your room the next morning. I'm not sure why they bother, as it was pretty inadequate as a breakfast.

So overall I left with mixed feelings about the Carriage House Inn. It was certainly different from the usual chains - yet in several ways the service on offer should be much better.

Stayed here on a college tour trip with my daughter. It is a wonderful place at a reasonable price in a great location close to downtown Newport. I would definitely come back here, both with my kids and on a getaway with my wife.

Only stayed one night as an overnight before a URI visitation tour with my daughter. Accommodations were very clean, roomy, and reasonably friendly. Bathroom ceiling had unfinished repair plaster patching, but not a big deal. Furniture and colors were early american, and felt a little like a B&B rather than a Comfort Inn affiliated hotel.

The only complaint I had was the breakfast, which was oddly delivered to the room, I assume because the hotel did not have a a common room I saw. At the arranged time, I was brought a frozen (hard) Jimmy Dean egg sandwich, and my daughter a bland looking pastry in pre-packaged cellophane. Luckily there was a microwave and mini fridge in the room.

All in all, would stay again. Room rates appeared pretty cheap off season, but I used points so cannot comment.

For those utilizing for URI, note the hotel is a little far from the college (about 30 mins), but there did not seem to be a lot of hotels in the area closer to the college being a resort area.

We stayed here, not knowing the area very well and just in town for a few days luckily. The hotel was in a mostly convenient place for our planned activities in the area. The hotel looked very cute on the website but was in need of some updating, considering it used to be a home or bed & breakfast at some point. When we checked in, no one was around for a good 20 minutes to check us in. When the female employee finally came out of the back room, there were no apologies for not being available right away. Our hotel room was decent size but with a very small closet and thin walls. The laundry room was right next door and we could hear the machines going. Also, we could hear activities outside. The first night that we came back in the late evening, the front door to the "hotel" was locked, not accessible by the hotel key and it took the female employee, a different one this time, over 5 mins. to come to the door to let us in. The female briefly explained she had locked the door for her "safety" and offered no apologies for us, the guests, having to stand outside because of her "safety" issues!! Finally, when we checked out, it was the Guest Service Manager that took approximately 8 mins to come to the front desk, offering no apologies for keeping me waiting. This "Manager" did not even ask about our stay, so I relayed our issues to him. I did not receive much of a response as to why the delay in checking in and out and lack of customer service in general. We were very disappointed in this hotel and would not recommend it, especially considering it was around $100/night. We have stayed in many hotels that were cheaper and a whole lot nicer with better customer service as well.

Wonderful little "cottage" hotel. Few rooms, but very clean and comfortable. Close to the historic district. The staff were accommodating and pleasant. Public areas nicely decorated....enjoyed the pool table. Will def stay here again, especially if I can get the same low rate through Resorts Plus International.

This hotel is small but very convenient to the Newport attractions. The rates are racked, so it was definitely a good buy for Thursday. The rate doubled for Friday night however, and for that price you may as well stay in downtown Newport. The tv was too small for the room, the a/c was too noisy so we had to sleep with the window open, and while the coffee was delicious the breakfast could have been better. The cakes and muffins were good, but fresh fruit, yogurt and bagels would have greatly improved the buffet. The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable.

Rooms are a nice size. Hotel is 5-10 minutes from mansions and downtown. Price is great. Front desk was helpful in recommending places to go and providing maps. They even pointed out the room safe charge that you can request to be removed at checkout.

Breakfast is a little lacking - I expected bagels, cream cheese, fruit, etc., but instead it was pastries, muffins, cereal, and hard-boiled eggs (which they ran out of one morning).
