“Clean and convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

Spent a night here while visting Newport. Typical Holiday Inn Express that was clean and in good shape. Rooms were quiet. There was no microwave or fridge in our room. Free internet worked well. Breakfast area had lots of seating and was well stocked. Hotel is a few miles from downtown Newport.

Typical Holiday Inn Express with clean rooms, nice staff, and average breakfast (powdered eggs, bacon, biscuits, gravy, cereals, muffins...). Pool was 3 ft entire length with a rough bottom - watch out. Chili's right next to the hotel. Internet connection was not stable for me and I had terrible Verizon phone service in the hotel as well.

This was your typical holiday express. The rooms were just as you expected as far as decor. (Comfortable but basic). The room was clean. The staff friendly. Breakfast area was packed and had no place to sit. Breakfast quality could have been a bit better. Selection was a little better than average but the quality of the breakfast needs to be improved. Attendant who worked there, was working really hard to replenish the area. He was doing a terrific job. I thought management could have "anticipated" needs, and sent additional staff to help clean and replenish food. One person for an entire full restaurant was not enough. (Terrible managing) I was amazed of the great job this young man was doing. I have nothing but praise for him, but shame on management for putting him in that position.

This hotel had everything we needed. Close proximity to beaches (short 10 minute drive), indoor pool for swimming with the kids in the evening, and a free breakfast. If you are looking for a budget hotel in this area, this is the one to book. I typically book the Hampton Inn when traveling with the family, and I would say that this hotel is worth the money savings. The only real problem was that while staying on the second floor, we could hear people moving around on the 3rd floor in the room and hallway above. If you are staying here, I would try and book the third floor.

Room Tip: Try and stay on the 3rd floor, quieter up there, no noise from anyone above you!

Understand hotel chains try to drain every last drop/dollar from Summer tourists, but for
$ 250.00 we were underwhelmed at check-in with hairs on our pillow, full grown mold fest on the A/C unit, dead bugs on the wall, and damaged furniture. We came back home and realized we left a phone charger in our room, called the front desk to see if housekeeping had found it, was told "will call you back in 5 minutes". Never heard back.. this was a real very poor experience, we visit Newport often and this motel is definitely off our list. A REAL rip-off.

While it is likely not a fault directly of the hotel, which in terms of fundamentals was fine, the noise at night from young carousing and even menacing inebriated guests cost us a night of sleep and, worse, the response of the management was unacceptable. First, for the positives. The property is clean with adequate towels and fair sized rooms all of which, it seems, offer a scenic view of parking lots in a patch of highway bordered by strip malls. The fitness room is adequate. At least the couple of machines worked. The staff was friendly. Given that our stay was short and that our calendar was full with obligations in Newport, we were happy to have little time around the hotel.

However, at about 1:45 in the morning, we were awakened by sudden and sonorous banging on our door. Fearing a legitimate emergency, I went to the peep hole to see no one. Calling out for the identity of the interloper, I heard the reply, "room service." Not at that hour for sure. I asked for identity again, and this time a hand came up and covered the peep hole from the outside. My wife phoned the front desk and after two attempts got a clerk who took note of the situation. Meanwhile, I noted several very inebriated people running in the hallway outside and talking with a group of young girls in the room across the way. No one from the management phoned back or did anything to quell the noise. In another half hour or so, a rowdy group began stomping on the floor above (we were on the second floor).

After this sleepless night, at checkout, I briefed the, again quite pleasant, clerk on the disturbance and my displeasure that no one had responded from the management to quiet matters. Her reply was that they had gotten multiple complaints and had determined that the offending guests were in the room next to ours. Her comment was "we will deal with it."

And that is the point. What does "dealing with it" eight hours later achieve? It does nothing to provide other quests with undisturbed rest, nor does it compensate them for their discomfort.

Clearly, if quiet and rest are as important as the cardboard and starchy breakfast, then this is a lodging to avoid.

Room Tip: Demand of the management that they not place groups of partying youth nearby.

Recently spent 3 nights at the hotel on our weekend getaway to see the Newport mansions. We had a room with a king size bed on a second floor at the end of the corridor. The room was very clean. We always had clean towels and our bed was made. The mattress was obviously old and somewhat soggy but I have back problems anyway. It was doable for a few nights. The front desk was very friendly when we checked in and out. Otherwise, we didn't communicate with them. The breakfast was just OK, typical Holiday Inn Express. But it was free and got your day started. We didn't use the gym or pool but they looked fine and others seemed to enjoy them. Our biggest problem was the very weak wi-fi signal. It kept going in and out, we only had 1 bar out of 4 usually, 2 occasionally. Maybe other rooms closer to the router have better signal and since we were at the end of the hallway, that was probably the main problem. Also, the first two nights, the hotel was extremely packed with lots of people and loud kids in the hallways, so that didn't help with the wi-fi signal (too many people trying to connect) and the noisy hallways. Thankfully, there were no noise problems late at night for sleeping.

Overall, it was a decent cheaper choice than staying in Newport directly. It was only about 10-15 minute (3 mile) drive to south Newport. I think we would stay there again if we make it back to Newport.

Room Tip: Avoid 1st floor; it smells like chlorine from the pool in the hallway, plus too many people in the h...
