“Dramatic coastal beauty”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

There really is a fort at Ft Wetherill, which guarded Narragansett Bay during WWI and WWII. Since then it has been abandoned to vandals, so the fort itself is not really the attraction. It's the breathtaking views from the trails above the fort. Lots of benches, all donated in the memory of loved ones, line the trails. If you have children keep them well in hand: it runs along the top of a cliff high above jagged rocks and crashing surf. Spectacular views of the Newport coastline from here.

“Another great location for beautiful views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2012

As a former RIer now living in the midwest, I have to soak up all the opportunities I can get for ocean views, the breezes, and the salt air. I love the hike to Fort Wetherill from downtown Jamestown, past beautiful homes, and ending on the cliffs where you can enjoy seeing all the sailboats on the bay.

“Off the beaten (Newport) path”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2012

On our way out of Newport, we detoured to tour Fort Wetherill and were pleasantly surprised! Some amazing views and great trails here! The fort itself is fascinating and we wish the state would put some money into its refurbishment.

“A good place to have a picnic and paint ball fights”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2012

This was once an enormous army base. Its entire ocean front is solid cement that housed TNT bunkers, 16 in. disappearing guns and personnel designed to repel a German invasion. In 1973 it was deeded to the state of Rhode Island under the Federal Lands to Parks program (FLP). Most of the park has been overgrown by invasive bitter sweet, poison ivy and thorns, but unlike much of it's sister park, Beavertail State Park, much more area has been cleared for picnics with picnic benches. In 1988 the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management illegally confiscated Newport Street belonging to the municipality of Jamestown and thereby deprived the public of vehicular access to the highest vantage point where one could observe the America's Cup Races. The TNT bunkers themselves provide an excellent backdrop for paint ball wars as is evidenced by the gross graffiti on the WWII fortifications. Entrance to the park is free, there is ample parking and a toilet.
