“Could be much better”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2005

The Edgewood Manor's biggest problem was poor guest services. For example, we were informed the innkeeper would be available till 7 p.m. every day, but most of the time she was nowhere to be found when we needed assistance. Our first morning at breakfast, again we couldn't find the innkeeper and had to ask another guest how breakfast is served since there was no food or beverages anywhere. We asked for more water bottles and were informed that the first two are free and any after that are $1.00 each. Other Inns that we've stayed at never charged for beverages. These problems individually might not seem like much, but when staying there for 4 nights it was very frustrating. The Edgewood Manor was impersonal, unaccomodating, and at times unfriendly. We definitely would not recommend the Edgewood Manor or stay there again.

We stayed at the Edgewood Manor in mid July for two nights.  Our family and friends occupied 13 of the manor's rooms for a wedding.
The manor is located in Cranston, R.I. just down the street from Roger Williams Park, and a sneeze away from Providence.  This was a perfect location for us as the wedding was two blocks away, and the reception was at the casino in Roger Williams Park. Very convenient.
The manor has two buildings, the main house which is a greek revival mansion, and the Charles Newhall House a 19th century victorian.
The architecture and decor in the foyer, parlor and dining room of the manor is grand and beautiful.  Even if you aren't staying and are just passing through, it is worth a peek if you are fond of greek revival design.
Our room, the Elms Suite was located in the Newhall House.  It has two bedrooms, a hallway, and huge bathroom with jacuzzi.  One nice thing about the manor is the way the innkeeper has combined old and new.  The furnishings and decor are antique, but there are modern amenities like air conditioning (in all rooms) and jacuzzis (in some rooms).  Even though it was sweltering hot outside, our room was very comfortable. The jacuzzi was great and we used it quite a bit.
My sister (the bride) was staying in the Samuel Priest Room in the main house.  This is the perfect honeymoon room.  It has a large king-size bed and two-person jacuzzi.
On the flip side, my mother stayed in one of the smaller rooms as she was traveling solo.  It was also beautifully decorated, and the bathroom was small (no jacuzzi) which was fine for her.
The breakfast included in the room price was delicious. There was a basket of warm blueberry-corn muffins on the dining table, and you could choose from two entrees, in our case waffles or eggs one morning, and pancakes or eggs the next.  The fresh baked pear with cinnamon was a real treat.
There is a drug store next door which we found helpful to pick up sodas, snacks and things like a sewing kit for last minute alterations.
I recommend the Edgewood without hesitation. The rooms live up to the pictures on its Web site, and the service we encountered was friendly, polite, and helpful. Our stay really was picture perfect for a very special occasion.
One thing to do before booking any B&B is to ask yourself if a B&B is right for you. Staying at a B&B is more like staying at someone's home rather than a hotel.  I have stayed at many B&Bs throughout the northeast and the south, and they vary greatly in quality and amenities.
In general, most B&Bs do not have telephones in each room, ice machines, room service or 24/7 guest service and vending machines.  Some I have stayed in also don't have air conditioning.
If those amenities are important for the trip you are on, a full-service hotel is probably a better option.  When I travel to large cities like New York or Boston, I personally prefer hotels.
But for a generally quieter, more personal type of stay a B&B can be a breath of fresh air. The Edgewood is an example of a B&B that has kept its historic integrity but added some modern upgrades like ACs and modern bathrooms that make a stay there enjoyable and fun.

I will definitely return when visiting the Providence area.

When I return each year to show my furniture at the Providence Fine Furniture Show I know there will be a fine Bed and Breakfast waiting for me. The Edgewood Manor Bed and Breakfast is like going to visit grandmother’s home, a good bed and a fine breakfast await you. You will find accommodating people to help you and clean rooms in either of their two dwellings. The surrounding area has much to do and explore, from a walk in the park, to fine restaurants in the quite neighborhood of Pawtuxet. After a day of exploring you will find tea awaiting you, severed among a collection of antiques and art that the owner Andrew presents in fabulous fashion. Each room on the main floor with their fire places, dark wood paneling and carpets gives one the sense of a time past. All in all, my wife and I look forward to staying at the Edgewood Manor each year, simply a very nice place to stay.

Lovely house with ornate architectural carvings and details. Stayed in the sister house next store, which is more plain, but very nice. Lots of antiques. Enjoyed breakfast by the fireplace in the dining room on New Years Day and driving around Roger Williams Park in the afternoon (its at the end of the street). Nice Cranston location, perfect for where our party was. Comfortable bed and spacious room. Only stayed one night but enjoyed our stay.

On top of finding tampon applicators in the room, broken lighting outside of the room, unsafe lighting outside the B&B, bugs in the shower curtain, and lack of food for breakfast, we ran into the rudest owners on the face of the earth. My wife who is 7 months pregnant was treated horribly by the female owner when she requested a glass of ice, prompting a shouting match.
This was the only B&B (the 4 others we stayed at on the trip were lovely) that did not provide an e-mail confirmation, saying that none was needed. When we had arrived, they had no record of us and no apologies. We would have been much better off in a cheap motel. By the way, the B&B is not in Providence.

, owner/innkeeper at Edgewood Manor Bed and Breakfast, responded to this review, December 9, 2004
I would like to respond to this individual who wrote this slanderous review. First there is no unsafe lighting in or around the Edgewood Manor or Newhall House. Next we are 2.5 miles from downtown Providence and half of Norwood Ave is in Providence the other is Cranston. Third the woman who was pregnantwho stayed was the rudest person on the planet and came down to breakfast at ten minutes past the cutoff time of ten o clock which we did not mind but she was extremely demanding and down right rude on top of it. She was extremely beligerant and belittling not only to me but to Suzanne our innkeeper. She came downstairs and threw the garbage that she found in the garbage can at the innkeeper. We had no idea that there was any garbage in the can. WE had previously let another guest into the room to inspect it and unbeknown to us they left a present in the garbage can. Suzanne apologized and gave them a free upgrade but I guess this was not enough. The male guest was very rude to other guests that weekend as well. l have To say we were happy to see them go was an understatement. By far the most nastiest people we ever had stay here at the Edgewood Manor! Definitely would have been better off in a cheap hotel or motel that is probably what they are used to.

I travel alot and my husband likes to travel. I was looking for a weekend away from the NY hustle but nothing prepared me for the Edgewood Manor, The house itself was beatiful furnished and the staff was very accomidating. My "picky husband, the chef" loved the gourmet breakfast and the suite was worth the trip. We will be bring more business thier way!!
