Owner description: Blithewold, named in Yankee Magazine's 2010 Best 5 Public Gardens in New England is located on Narragansett Bay, 25 minutes east of Providence and 60 minutes south of Boston. Blithewold, a 33-acre summer estate with grand views of Narragansett Bay, is nationally significant in American history as one of the most fully developed and authentic examples of the Country Place era. The property features a 45-room mansion filled with family heirlooms framed by a series of lovely gardens that range in character from mysterious to exotic and from poetic to practical. An exceptional collection of rare and unusual plants, specimen trees, an accessible greenhouse, and whimsical stonework project a character that is romantic, fresh and inspiring - and unique to Blithewold. “Splendid garnes and lovely home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

The gardens and mansion are a wonderful alternative to the often more crowded Newport mansions. Depending on what time of year you visit, you'll have an opportunity to see some amazing floral displays and specimen trees. The self-guided tour around the expansive grounds is easily managed with the free map and guide. The mansion tour is also self-guided, but docents are available to give you some history of the home and family or you can also learn more from the information cards posted in the individual rooms.

If you are a AAA member, the ticket for bothe garden and mansion is $10.

I went on a Sunday morning (they open at 10), and I practically had the place to myself.

“Beautiful & serene”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

The grounds are spectacular depending on the time of year. The mansion rates right up there with any in Newport. We've attended weddings there and it is a beautiful location with a gorgeous water vista.

“Go when the daffodils are out”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

It's an interesting house and nice gardens when the daffodils are blooming. One visit is enough, but it's worth doing if you are in the area at that time of year. There's small shop that sells some pretty interesting trinkets and gifts.

“A Mansion to Make Your Own”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

One enters the beautiful Blithewold translated.."Beautiful-woods" Mansion through the Rose Garden and under the stone-made "Moon Bridge." Equipped with a little map of the grounds, one can wander at their leisure and enjoy a self-guided tour of both the engrossing gardens including the largest Sequoia Tree east of the Mississippi and splendid flowering bushes, annuals and perennials and the gorgeous water pond as well as inside the Mansion, where guides quietly stand or sit close by, to answer any questions about the original owners of the property and their fantastic history. The grass lawn stretches down to Narragansett Bay and the sea breeze accompanies the most delightful of mornings or afternoons.

“If you love gardens. . .”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

Blithewold is a small mansion by Newport standards but it is a lovely and lovingly preserved summer home. One gets the feeling it was a happy home. The self-guided tour includes spectacular gardens, formal and "natural." You can easily spend two hours wandering the house and grounds. I think it would be even nicer if the place had a little tea room selling coffee, tea and drinks. Since they don't, make sure you bring some water if you are touring the grounds in the summer heat .
