“Perfect vacation at Avonlea - so perfect we got engaged!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

I can't imagine staying anywhere else on BI. Avonlea is in the ideal location just a 5 minute walk to town but off the main drag so you can enjoy the peaceful beach-front atmosphere. The views cannot be beat, breakfasts were delicious, staff was helpful, and rooms were comfortable. My now fiance and I stayed in the Emerald room. The only negative comments I could muster about the experience (and I'm really struggling to find any constructive criticism!) is that the shower in the Emerald bathroom had very poor water pressure and made rinsing any sand near impossible at times, and has a retractable showerhead that can mount on the wall but anchors at the tub edge, so the shower curtain/liner can't get a good seal over the hose and water tends to go everywhere. Also at night you do get noise from Yellow Kittens tavern next door, but I wasn't bothered by it. If anything I would wake up, laugh at the horrible singing ability of whomever the live music was that night, and fall back asleep. But that is a tiny inconvenience and was more than compensated for by everything else that was glorious about Avonlea. Amazing, wonderful, perfect, look no further. This is where to stay on BI.

We stayed in the Diamond room in Avonlea. Everything was perfect from being steps away from the ocean, to drinking wine watching the waves crash on the deck. Right near everything but you still have the quiet, peacfullness. The inn keepers were so sweet and helpful. It was actually our honeymoon and they surprised us with chocolate covered strawberies and champange. We wish there was more of an option for breakfast, so after the first morning we went out to eat. I need bacon or sausage. But the cookies were excellent. We defenitly would stay here again.

Room Tip: The Diamond room was great, being on the first floor and you get to walk in and out onto the deck...

Just loved the Avonlea!! Adorable place, wonderful breakfast and afternoon wine/cheese/homemade cookies! The view is outstanding and the staff is very friendly and helpful. We were pleasantly surprised they had beach chairs and towels, next time we'll leave those at home. The porch is so lovely and peaceful, and the views in both directions are incredible. It is a very peaceful place and in walking distance to Old Harbor and very close to several restaurants. I hope to return soon!!

When I booked my stay in March, I assumed I would be at Avonlea as the Waverly Suite II was listed under there at the time. The confirmation email and all subsequent emails were sent from 'Avonlea Jewel of the Sea'. It was quite the surprise when we arrived and found out that the Waverly cottage wasn't even near Avonlea and breakfast/cocktail hour would be at the Blue Dory, not in an airy room overlooking the sea but a dark cramped parlor.
As to the suite, it was spacious but sparsly furnished. The bedroom was nice and opened up to a shared deck but the living room lacked the most basic of sitting space even for just the two of us. I have no idea how a bigger family would have coped. The saving grace was a cozy front porch perfect for relaxing and people watching. Breakfast was very good and served in a bright cellar. The cocktail hour was dismal with warm wine, lemonade that tasted artificial and a sad tray of cheese and crackers.
The pluses is that the suite cottage was a short walk to both town and the beach as well as a couple of cute shops. With some much needed renovations and furniture this has the potential for really being a jewel by the the sea.

Simple.. Beautiful Place, Great Staff, Great Snacks, Cleanliness and Room Size OK. Staff and view make this place worth every penny. Would tell anyone I know to stay here. Specialized treatment by the staff. Awesome grounds and just steps to the beautiful beach. Also short walk to town center.

This property is very charming and has a homey feel. Apparently this is one of 3 inns owned and operated as Victorian Inns by the Sea. I stayed at the Blue Dory the first 2 nights and found it very dark, dated and cramped, but the Avonlea was the opposite -- bright and airy with the nicest porch and view of the entire beach. A problem I experienced on the island was with rental bikes. A bike was supposedly "stolen" from the Blue Dory where I was staying. Without going into it, I suggest anyone renting a bike on the island request a copy of the rental agreement, make sure to get a receipt for payment and request a lock for the bike and use it. Be sure to also find out the policy of the rental company if the bike is "stolen", apparently something that occurs "all the time", unbeknownst to unsuspecting tourists. Quite frankly, the "stolen" rental bike situation ruined an otherwise pleasant stay on the island. I think there are enough nice places to vacation where local businesses understand the importance of tourism to the viability of their own little island.

The Avon Lea is a beautiful place to stay. It has central air! Thank-God. It was so hot the weekend we stayed. It is within walking distance from the ferry. The shops & restaurants are nearby also. We went to Captain Nick's both nights to see The Blushing Brides. It is a very short distance to the clubs. We rented a couple of rooms with 7 girls. We rented the Jewel & Garnet together. You get a discount if you rent the rooms together. We had a full kitchen and 2 bathrooms! You need at least 2 bathrooms with 7 girls! We stay every year at The Blue Dory or the Avon Lea. The Avon Lea has a beaitiful wrap around porch that overlooks the ocean.
Can't say enough good things about this place.

Room Tip: The Jewel & Garnet together
