We celebrated our last night of vacation dining at the 1661 Inn, Hotel Manisses. The staff was very gracious, and the appetizers were delicious. My friend ordered the lobster gnocchi, which was quite good. However, the pan seared sea bass I ordered was dry and overcooked. I was very disappointed. The waiter said this was a new dish they were introducing for the fall, and it had got other negative reviews. I couldn't understand why they continued to serve it. He offered to have a new dish brought out. Right after this, the fire alarm went off and the ear piercing noise went on for several minutes. During that time, my meal was replaced. The hostess explained that the fire alarm was triggered by strong winds, which caused a dip in power supply. This is something we've noticed on the island, where strong winds coming off the ocean cause many power outages and accompanying inconvenience. It takes a lot of getting used to for a visitor, and can put a dent in a nice vacation. Happily, the newly cooked dish was better, though not wonderful, and the wines and dessert were excellent. My meal was comped, unlike Spring House, where we fell victim to another bad "new fall dish" experience. The staff at Manisses were very professional, thoughtful and apologetic, so we think we may go back.
