“Exceeded our expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

This place exceeded all of our expectations! First I would like to start off by commending the two sisters running this inn for all their hard work. They turned the inn into a cozy, well kept, friendly, inviting inn. The inn itself is one of the only inns on Block Island with AIR CONDITIONING! Score! When my boyfriend and I began looking for a place to stay over the weekend of Aug 9-12 we were booking during a heat wave back home and couldn’t imagine staying at a place without it. I called inn after inn hotel after hotel and besides not having any vacancy no one had AC. When the girl renovated the inn they added industrial AC’s to the rooms (not window units like the other inns claiming to have AC). I’m not sure if all the rooms have AC so make sure to ask when booking.
Besides the comfort and cleanliness of the rooms these two sisters really try to accommodate their guests. When we booked it was a holiday weekend. Hardly anywhere had vacancy. The girls at the inn had two separate rooms broken up over the four days that they were able to offer us. At first we weren’t too excited about having to switch from one room the first night two another next two. Later we realized we got to experience the stay in two very different rooms. After the first night the girls told us to pack up our belongings and they would move it from one room to the other for us, which they did. Every night around 5pm the girls place wine and a light appetizer out for their guest in a common area for a happy hour. Every morning when you wake up you can go downstairs into the kitchenette area and enjoy a homemade breakfast prepared by the two sisters. They made omelets, Mexican egg omelet, breakfast burritos, oatmeal blueberry bake, bagels, crepes, and always had fresh fruit. Definitely satisfying if you’re looking for a “little something” to start your day.
The inn itself is located within walking distance to basically everything. The ferry is right around the corner, restaurants and bars are within walking distance, and there is also a market. The liquor store is right around the corner steps within walking distance. The market and liquor store came in handy when we ran out of food, alcohol, and ice which we brought across the island with us in our coolers. There is also a small dorm sized refrigerator in the common area to store some food or beverages in as well.
For days you want to go to the beach the two sisters have provided a variety of beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, footballs, whiffle ball bats and more for their guest to take with them to enjoy their day. There is also FREE parking if you bring your vehicle. The day we departed check-out time was at 11am. There was a place to store all of our belongings while we explored the islands more before heading off to the Ferry.
All in all I am overly satisfied and surprised with this place and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to spend the weekend on Block Island.

I don't have enough great things to say about this place and I feel like we found a gem when we booked it for a bachelorette weekend. First of all, the location was great. You are on the main drag with cute shops right there, a liquor store steps away (wish I knew that before lugging alcohol over on the ferry), the beach right across the street, nightlife in walking distance, bike rentals a few blocks away, restaurants, a cute coffee shop across the street. Seriously, great spot.

Secondly, this place is so charming and totally accommodating. The rooms are on the small side, sure, but there's a communal vibe and using the space is encouraged. You're on an island anyway, what are you doing in your room besides sleeping? The girls who run the hotel offer a happy hour in the common area upstairs and our neighbors invited us to hang out with them on the shared porch. Everyone there is super friendly. We always said hi and chatted with other guests when we saw them out and about on the island just like we were greeted by other guests when we got back from the beach or dinner.

One of the other guests told us that after asking the girls where he could buy a cooler and ice to keep drinks in his room, they instead brought a dorm fridge up to the second floor common area for him to use (and of course he told us to help ourselves to what he had in there). We used the charcoal grills outside to make dinner one night and the girls gave us grilling utensils and serving platters to use. Did I mention that they have a bunch of beach towels, umbrellas, and chairs for guests to use at the beach? Saves some room packing! They make a tasty breakfast and we ate outside in the yard at one of the picnic tables. They also had a firepit with adirondack chairs around it back there. We could see that they were working on projects (making furniture and fixing things) so it's obvious that the girls are putting their stamp on this place and fixing it up a bit.

We were a group of girls and we saw another group of women, some young couples, some older (probably 50s) groups. Didn't see any children but I'm sure it'd be okay for kids, just seems like a more of a social adult crowd. Not loud or anything (though we did get loud our first night!). Bottom line, this place enhances your vacation and I can't wait to stay again!

My husband and I decided on a weekend away on Block Island at the last minute. Most of the hotels and b&bs on the island were fully booked, but, fortuitously, the Darius Inn had a cancellation and we were able to make a reservation. The inn is a rambling old house, renovated in a "shabby chic" style. I'd say it's best for couples, friends, families, or anyone looking for a relaxed, unpretentious New England vibe. We arrived before check-in but were provided a place to stash our bags and were offered a late breakfast and towels so we could head out to the beaches immediately. Everyone we interacted with was extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was very small, but adequate. It looked like it had been renovated but maintained a simple charm. The attached bathroom was impeccably clean and amply sized. They have a little kitchen/dining area and offered a variety of sweets and savories for breakfast. I usually have juice or a smoothie for breakfast, and they were nice enough to blend me a concoction of fresh veggies--very tasty too! Outside there are picnic tables and a fire pit, upstairs there is a little foyer where the proprietors set out wine and a light snack in the evening. You can enjoy your drink out on the second-floor porch where there are chairs to chat or read or play mancala. My one complaint (not the fault of the folks at the Darius) was that there was quite a bit of noise from the street in the early hours of the morning as the bars emptied. I suppose that comes with the territory when you stay in town though. Overall, I was very pleased with the experience. This is the Darius's first season, so there are still renovations underway. It is not "polished" or formal by any stretch of the imagination. It may not be the place to stay if you are looking for something very traditional, but it fits the bill if you want to feel like you're visiting hip young friends in a low-key island atmosphere.

We were supposed to stay at another "higher rated" property on the island but due to my blunder ended up searching for a place to stay. Enter the Darius. Though not fancy, our room was comfy, clean and just fine. The staff was extremely friendly, helpful and pleasant in every way. Daily wine and hors d'oureves were nice, location is excellent, breakfast really yummy. All in all couldn't ask for more and the price was right, too.

Room Tip: Room 25 is small. But OK.

The Darius Inn was extremely accommodating, from the beach chairs & towels to breakfast and happy hour! It's the perfect location, just around the corner from the National Hotel/ferry and a close walk to the bars. The sisters who run the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful, even gave me champagne and a beach tote as a gift! We brought food to cook on the Inn grills and hung out by the camp fire. The rooms are a bit small, but we had adjoining rooms and a kitchen, so it was perfect. For what we needed it for, the beds and cots/futon worked just fine. All hotels on Block Island are old, so you're not going to get luxurious rooms - you pay for location! Which this inn is perfect, literally steps from the beach. We had a ton of fun and all guests were friendly - we sat on the upstairs deck together with sangria and enjoyed the sunsets!

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with AC in the summer!

We have been staying at this site for several years. The new owners have been working hard to make changes/upgrades and in the short time they have owned it they have done a great job. I am not one for watching TV at the beach nor in the 18 yrs I have been staying on the block ever really felt the need for a/c - but they have added a/c and TVs to most of the rooms. Loved that we could bring our dog this year. The Darius is downtown but across from the beach, the shops and ferry and some of the best restaurants are within walking distance. It can be noisy as any of the old inns downtown can be. We love it and have already made our reservations for next year!

The Darius is an old inn in a great location. But, it was simply not a comfortable place to stay. The room we were in was so tiny, it barely fit a queen size bed. It was pushed against the wall and we both had to get in/out one side of the bed. There was no air conditioning (in August, with 100% humidity) and only one tiny window in the room. Although we were given a fan, it was much too hot to sleep comfortably. The walls were also very thin and the inn was noisy, with people coming and going (and doing laundry) at all hours. The shower was lukewarm and had so little water pressure, it was difficult to even wash your hair. The sisters that run it were very friendly and had clearly made an effort to spruce up the room by painting the wood paneling and using colorful bedding, but creaky floors, a very dirty door, and a rusted old heater made it feel run down. Small details (like water glasses in the room) were overlooked and when you went to find someone at the "desk" (a small, cluttered room off the kitchen) there was no one around. When we left, we couldn't even find anyone to return the key to.

The inn had a very relaxed, island feel...which I love. But, I also love a good night's sleep and a hot shower. For $250 a night, I think that's reasonable to expect.

We are very sorry to hear about your uncomfortable experience at our inn, however we have welcomed your review as an opportunity to make some necessary changes to your accommodation. Each of our rooms is very unique, the positives of Room 5 is that it has a private deck, is pet friendly and has a brand new bathroom and bamboo floors. To improve the room we have built in a few pieces of furniture (bedside tables, bathroom shelving, a beautiful headboard and a radiator cover/table) which have allowed us to rearrange the room enabling bed entrance from both sides as well as space for water glasses!

We are a brand new inn and are constantly rearranging our space for guest comfortability- we don't have a true front desk/reception area but instead a breakfast room and storage room. Though maybe not ideal for someone wanting a more formal hotel experience, it maintains our homey atmosphere. We try to keep these spaces clutter free as much as possible, but we are often storing luggage (as you know island visits depend on ferry schedules) which can make a cluttered feel. Again, we are an ever evolving space and will work out these kinks as we go!

As for the water pressure/temperature, we wish you would have brought this to our attention during your stay. We have a custom crafted circulator that pushes the hot water through the building during our most high traffic shower hours. This is the first complaint we've had on the subject, but we are able to adjust its flow if need be.

As for the cost of your room, we are sorry you did not feel the value was met. We put a lot of thought into our pricing and want to be sure it is appropriate. We have since adjusted the cost of room 5 a bit, but please also understand that we are a seasonal business in a prime location on Block Island-- August is how we pay our mortgage!

Thank you,
Christy
