“Rose Farm means Peace and Quiet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2011

We've stayed here several times and have come to associate this place with peace and quiet. Located a bit back from the ocean away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist traffic, such as it is, it feels more like a farm in the country with it's gentle hills and open pastures. There's usually a gentle breeze wafting through that keeps things cool enough so there's no need for air conditioning. You just hear the rolling surf and the birdsong most of the time. The property is clean and well maintained. The continental breakfast is good enough with lots of coffee, fruit, and cereals. Easy walking distance to town.

Pros:

Beautiful grounds, blissfully quiet. A place you can unwind with little lacking in the comfort department.

Cons:

Getting our room cleaned each day was inconsistant. While we got new towels each day I dont think the room was vacuumed or the sheets changed during the few days we were there. We aren't dirty people and are pretty easy going but it was a bit disconcerting.

Room Tip: Stay in the Captain Rose House

I chose this B&B because of the location. We stayed in the original farm house. It was OK. It was a little over rated per Tripadvisor, based on my travel experience. The room was relatively clean but pretty tired. Could use a simple facelift that would bring it up a BIG notch.

I think the location is amazing and the rooms are adequate, but there are really no amenities to speak of - in other words, nothing terribly special about it. BUT - if you want a relatively clean, not too fancy, easy to get to all the attractions place to stay, its just fine.

Please note: internet really slow - but that's most likely the provider, not the hotel.
Breakfast was again...just ok. Nothing special.

Room Tip: Ask for the new building - probably less tired than the original farm house.

We went to the RFI for a long weekend to celebrate our 30th anniversary with our grown (pretty much) children. We were a party of 6 adults in 3 rooms - 2 rooms in the Farm House, 1 in the newer Capt. Rose House.
It was a short walk from the ferry, which was not bad at all - 1/4 mile on a sidewalk - we all pulled our suitcases with no trouble. I was worried about the 'hike' after reading reviews here, but we made the trip many times, and it was no problem.

We were able to check in early and found a lovely Anniversary card and bottle of sparkling water and wine glasses waiting for us in our room. Our room (Capt. Rose) was large and bright - there was a standing fan which we used at night. Our kids were in the Farm House which I found to be a bit dark - smaller rooms, but they didn't care.

I think the location was perfect - right between the Atlantic Inn and the Spring House - had drinks on the lawn of each - lovely views. The Manissees petting zoo is just down the lane - we used it as a shortcut to town and enjoyed our daily visits with the Zedonk, yak, and friends.
My favorite part of the day was my early morning coffee on the deck - as a coffeeholic the all day coffee pot was one of the things that sold me on this inn. On the back deck there are 3 tables and 4 chaise lounges for use - we brought our breakfast outside every morning and loved eating with a view of the ocean and surrounding meadows. Very peaceful - surrounded by flower gardens and birdsong!
We are walkers, so the 1 mile to Mohegan Bluffs was a nice morning constitutional for us - we didn't want to join the crowds of bikers we saw. We did take a taxi to Mansion Beach one day, but the rest of the trip we walked everywhere.
There is a firepit in the meadow that is lit every night from 8 to 10 - we used it one night to toast marshmallows (forgot a stick though - that was the biggest challenge).
Our overall impression was of tranquility, peace, quiet and beauty. This was just a lovely, relaxing oasis to return to.

Room Tip: Rec. a room on the 2nd floor of the Capt. Rose House.

Lots of plusses for this place. We stayed in the newer, annex building. Rooms really modern--essentially new, large baths, front and rear entrances, great view onto a rolling hill meadow, and great cross-breezes (can we get screen doors please?). Breakfast in the am was pretty solid--lots of fruit, pastries, hb eggs, oj and the like. Filling and my wife was pleased. The other plusses: close to town (although up a big hill) and they have their own bike rental place on the property that they run, with nice bikes (although at a fairly steep price). So, from that standpoint, good.

What I wish it had was two things--a great view and a vibe. The view of the ocean they will never have--which made me want to stay at the Spring House or simliar old place on the water (but they don't get great reviews) but more importantly, this place felt just a bit too sterile. Maybe it was the total quiet in which everyone eats breakfast (can we have some light music and a gracious host welcoming you?) or the odd quiet all around the place (especially noticable when you see everyone at the Atlantic outside and conversing at happy hour). Net net, this is a pretty good place, but the owners (who are really crunchy and real) need to make more of an effort to get involved with their guests.

One last thing: at $310 per night (high season) I expect a lot. That may have biased things. But it needs it.

My recommendations if you stay on the Island: rent a moped, go to the Monhegan cliffs, go to the Oar, and the Lighthouse and ride the horses on the beach.

My husband and I wanted to get away for a few days on Block Island, RI and we just randomly picked the Capt Rose Inn . Wow! we were impressed and so happy. It is clean comfortble and extremely convenient to the downtown area. You can easily walk there with luggage from the ferry. Also an extremely easy walk to restaurants in town. The property is set on some beautiful rolling fields. The balconies from some of the rooms look out onto these fields where you can relax and read or just watch the geese, deer and golden finches. We will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: room #14 is on the first floor- generally quiet but you can hear footsteps above you. Perhaps a room...

Very helpful staff. Awesome location for our quick trip. It could use an update on bedding though. Outdated decor. Beautiful gardens and landscape. Light breakfast but nice way to start the dAy. The spring house and Atlantic are with in 100 yards and the perfect spot to grab a high end speciAlty cocktail and app with a view.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2011

My husband and I spent a lovely summer weekend at the Rose Farm Inn this July. It is perfectly situated within walking distance to town and all restaurants and shops and bars, but is removed from the late night revelry and occaisional noise in the town center. The inn is situated on a bluff overlooking the ocean, bewteen the Spring House and the Atlantic Inn. I recommend the former for drinks on the porch and the latter for a delicious prix-fixe dinner.

The room was quiet on the second floor of the original farmhouse building. The room was quite clean and spacious, decorated with an eclectic mix of antiques. The bathroom was quite small and rather spartan, but again very clean and practical.

There is a bike rental place right on the grounds and we rented bikes for our entire stay. We loved not getting in the car for the whole trip. All the island beaches are within easy biking distance of the inn. They will provide you with clean towels for the beach every day.

All the young people working at the inn were very helpful and polite. One small negative would be the meager breakfast (basically cold cereal and yogurt and toast. very little in the way of fruit) But again this was a small detraction from the beautiful, quiet setting.

We recommend requesting an ocean view room. The views and the light are quite lovely. Also for those who might mind, there was no A/C at the inn. We found we did not need it at all despite it being one of the summer's warmest weekends. The fan and the prevailing breezes on top of the bluff kept the room very comfortable in the evening.

We look forward to returning next summer!

Room Tip: suggest you request ocean view
