“Bachelorette Party weekend was a success!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2010

I stayed at The National with 7 other girlfriends for a bachelorette party weekend. For what we needed the rooms for it was fine. We spent very very little time in the hotel room and I would not recommend this hotel for everyone. The rooms are somewhat small, the beds were not comfortable, and it was loud from street noise and the band downstairs. The pluses of the hotel is that it's a great location and it included a continental breakfast on the deck -- that was wonderful! The hotel staff were also very nice and they even provided towels and ice for our cooler.

Again, for a fun weekend with the girls -- it was perfect! If you are looking for a quiet hotel.....this is not the place for you! (although the rooms at the back of the hotel might be quieter!)

This was a first visit to both Block Island and to the National. It was a two day / one night trip and we will most likely return to both BI and the National (but probably to the hotel for meals only).

On the positive side, the location is very convenient and from our room we had a great view of the harbor. The restaurant was the real strength of the hotel. We arrived in time for lunch and, while it was not our original intention, we ate the rest of our meals there on the deck, The wait staff were great and the food was even better.

On the negative side, the noise of the late night revelers was very noticeable and this was a weekday night. This probably could be lessened if we had a room on the other side of the hotel but then we would not have had the view we liked so much. It also appeared that the back porch of the hotel is a convenient place in the morning for some of those revelers, who are not hotel guests, to chill and catch up on their sleep. Lastly, it is certainly understandable that English may not be the first language of the housekeeping staff. However, when the staff has no ability to communicate with the guests, then that can be somewhat frustrating.

Would we go back to the National? We might but it would be definitely be in the off season.

It's an old hotel w/o AC and doesn't have many amenities. The room was small. But, the location, ambiance, vibe and active night life made it well worth the $315 per weekend night for a queen overlooking the back. The restaurant is excellent for breakfast and it's lively at night. It's right on Water St. and it's very convenient to the beach, restaurants, and ferry. The staff was very nice, no issues at all. We checked in two hours early and received a slight upgrade at that time (to a larger queen room). Their little store in the lobby, Essentials, is a really good store of its kind. It's not that the National is not a family hotel, but it does seem to be more of a couples/adult type place. Altogether a terrific place.

Being and Innkeeper for 25 years, I am particular about where I stay on vacation. I seek out non-chain and interesting small hotels. The National was perfect for our getaway needs. The website describes the hotel well. The reservation system was easy to use and the staff was very accommodating to our needs. The cooler rooms are with island views but if you want both book a corner room, cool and with views. The hotel is well staffed and clean, everyone was friendly and the restaurant was great. Ella was our server for our first meal and we liked her so much that we asked for one of her tables for our last night.
The island is small enough to walk most places, the first night we walked to the west side for a nice sunset view on the beach, just a few miles each way. The second day we rented bicycles and went to the North Lighthouse. Great ride with a few hills, on the way back we stopped by the beach by the "yellow victorian house" and no one else was there so it was great.
We swam in the ocean at the town beach and at Ballard's. Both beaches were great but I would skip anything to do with Ballards restaurant and bar. We walked to Mohegan Cliffs which is not to be missed.
Everything was perfect, thanks to the Island residents for taking care of us so well!

Very poor service - would discourage anyone from considering this hotel - if you cannot book at another hotel, then I would recommend that you vacation on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket.

The hotel is over 100 years old so the rooms are small but well laid out and tastefully appointed. Rooms with a view of the ocean are nice. However, for some reason many of the doors slam really loudly. There is weekend entertainment downstairs that is rather loud until about 11:30 p.m. And if the fog horn is needed for boat safety, it goes off regularly. It started at about 5:30 a.m. one morning during our stay. Breakfast in the open air on nice days; relaxing on the porch or lawn while sipping wine and reading; being near the ocean -- these were great. But if you're a light sleeper, you might want to choose something more inland.

Visited Block Island with family. There were six of us included 2 toddlers. Have been coming to Block Island for many years and found The National to be a wonderful hotel that fit our needs perfectly.

When staying on Block Island it is good to keep in mind that accommodations are quintessential New England island style. Meaning no air conditioning, rustic and often times there are no televisions in the guest rooms. Sometimes bathrooms are shared. The charm of this makes Block Island what it is and is helpful to keep in mind.

Since we were traveling with children it was important to have a TV in the room, and to have our own bathroom, The National offers both. Our room was on the third floor, had a beautiful harbor view and was very clean. The bottle opener on the wall was a nice touch! The National has a bar, a lively one so it is best to stay on the third floor or away from the bar if possible.

To help guests with travel, the hotel offers a place to store luggage and access to bathroom/changing room. This is helpful should you decide to take a later ferry.

The restaurant is delicious and there is lots going on in the lobby. It is one of the livelier hotels, perfect for people looking to socialize and experience the charm of Block Island. The location can not be beat!!
