“Charming and Affordable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2010

My husband and I have been staying at the Harborside Inn for the last six years. Just recently the rooms have been adorably updated with new linens and exposed wood ceilings. The location is fantastic, directly in the middle of town with only a short walk to the beach. The mid week specials are fantastic, there is no better place to stay on the island for convenience, service and price.

We stayed in the Harborside last weekend, in August, and paid $280/night including tax for three nights for me, my wife and two girls, ages 10 and 13.
The hotel is conveniently located in front of the ferry, the only problem being that when you sit on the lovely wooden porch area the diesel fumes smell sometimes wafts onto your table.
Now for the bad stuff. The room was tiny. The pullout bed was stained and disgusting--nobody wanted to sleep on it. So, the hotel gave us a blowup full sized mattress, but that took up the whole second room. There was no closet to hang the clothes. The bureau was so gross we didn't even want to put our clothes in there. The bathroom was tiny. All the furniture was like 40-year old ikea, deteriorated, etc.
We found numerous hairs on our bed--that weren't ours! They never seemed to clean the floor--every day we came back it was still sandy and dirty -- we cleaned it ourselves.
The restaurant was actually good. We had a great seafood sort of medley with a crab cake on top that was delicious-- even went back the second night to have it again.
But the breakfast was totally disorganized--at various times and often at the same time they ran out of things -- fruit, coffee, milk. big lines would form of guests waiting for stuff to arrive. There were romanian girls working there for the summer--they were perfectly nice and helpful when they could, but clearly hadn't been trained very well.
the water, by the way, is delicious--comes apparently from an artesian well below the hotel.
Anyway, Block Island was so lovely that our memories will be of the island more than of the hotel. not sure we'd go back again in august, though. a surprising amount of traffic made it sometimes difficult to.
PS There was a really nice Peruvian guy at the front desk-- a big dude, helpful.

We travel to Block Island for a mini vacation (two days, one night) with our two daughters, one under 2 and one over 10. While it is a very short walk from the Pt. Judith ferry to the Inn, I recommend bringing a wagon or something to lug your stuff if you have a lot like we did; cooler, beach chairs, towels & toys, plus luggage. We were able to leave our non-beach items at the Inn (arrived before check-in at 3 pm) since we walked right to Ballards beach after our arrival. Once back from the beach we went up to our room which had a small bedroom off the smallish room that had the "pull-out" couch. It was clean with I believe IKEA furniture.

As we requested, there was a pack-n-play set up for our toddler. We were able to let her take a nap in the bedroom while my husband and I took turn taking our tween out and about exploring the town. We had dinner on the veranda which was very nice and the food was delicious; a little pricey but to be expected at a resort island.

Our night's sleep wasn't the best because it was hot and humid with no A/C and wanting to leave the windows open meant we could hear the noise from the other rooms who also had their windows open. The bed in the bedroom was a little hard.

The continental breakfast was had slice melons, bagels with flavored cream cheese, small muffins, pastries, yogurt, some whole fruits and juice and coffee with flavored creamers. Very adequate for our family. I was surprised by the 10 am check even though it was posted but again we were able to leave our belonging at the Inn while we did activities on the Island before our return ferry trip. Overall it was a good place to stay for our family and had the best location for exploring Block Island.

I would not suggest this hotel for anyone that is looking for a clean, bright place to stay. The rooms are tiny, no real lighting( dim lamps) beds are small and not real comfortable. The bathroom is tiny---no spot to place a toiletries bag, no blow dryer, no iron, no fridge, no alarm clock. There was a tv that was from the 1980 that was placed on a rickety tv dinner tray that got 4 channels. We did have AC---which was a huge standing floor unit that took up any extra space there could have been. One small musty dresser with 3 drawers, no closet to hang clothes....again....perfect for "crashing" after a night of partying---but certainly not a comfortable or nice place to stay.

My boyfriend and I recently went to the Harborside Inn for a romantic getaway weekend. We were told "not to worry" by the woman who we spoke to on the phone. "The ocean breeze will make up for having no air conditioning. You won't even be able to tell that there's no air conditioning." Is what she told us. WRONG! We decided to go mid-July and a heat wave hit during out trip. Of course the ocean breeze was cool outside, but they stuck us in a tiny room on the 3rd floor- no air conditioning, a small fan that didn't do anything, and a shower that I wore my flip flops in because it was gross. I would not suggest this over-priced, low quality Inn to ANYONE.

Stayed at Harborside Inn for the first time in many years of going to Block Island. Like most places it had it's good points and bad...
First the good: Perfect location. Right across the street from the ferrys and smack in the middle of "the strip". You can walk anywhere from here and if you don't want to walk, the taxi stand is across the street and the moped and bike rental place is behind the hotel (discount coupons are available from the from desk). Check in was quick and receptionists very nice. The room and hotel was very clean and had beautiful wood floors. There is a luggage storage room for early check ins and the hotel provides beach towels (not umbrellas) and an ice machine is right off the front entrance for easy cooler fill ups. I actually even like the fact that the room key was actually a key and not a card. It is an older hotel and we had a fuse blow as we were getting ready to go out that night, we reported it to the front desk and it was fixed by the time we returned.
Not so good: There is no elevator (or handicap entrance that I saw) and quite a few (steep & crooked) steps to get into the hotel as well as to the rooms. This made carrying heavy luggage a little There are very few rooms available with window air conditioning units (fans are provided in the rooms) and for a very hot weekend, it was a little uncomfortable. The beds were only full size and very hard (a matter of preference). Because you sleep with the windows open you can hear the other people in their rooms with their windows open (street noise was not an issue though). Hallways are tight and it was a little noisy when people would walk through. Hair dryers were not provided, so I was glad I packed mine. The price was a little higher than I would have liked to pay, but it was the best option for us and it is Block Island in the middle of summer.
I can not tell you about the restaurant, we did not eat there. I can tell you a continental breakfast (pastries, bagels, juice, coffee, fruit, and yogurt) was provided each day and it was fair. We would more than likely stay here again.

Like some other properties on Block Island, this inn also seems to attract a wide range of reviews. My wife and I just returned from our first visit to Block Island and we were very satisfied with our stay at the Harborside Inn. As the name indicates, it is an "Inn" not a Marriott, so it helps to keep your expectations in line. On the plus side, the location is excellent, the veranda overlooking the street and harbor offers nice views, our room and bathroom were spotlessly clean, and the front desk staff were very pleasant and helpful. We stayed during the week and paid about $130 with tax and continental breakfast included, so we considered it a very good value. Rooms vary significantly in size. We had a very small room on the third floor facing the back (non-oceanview). Other rooms are larger with 2 double beds. True, the stairs and floors are all leaning one way or the other, and the stairs to the third floor are difficult to navigate with luggage. The only real negative aspect of our room was that the box spring in our bed creaked with slightest movement and the sheets didn't seem to fit properly. The continental breakfast is average. Restaurant staff were very pleasant and helpful. Note to visitors coming from Montauk: this inn is across the street from the CT and RI ferries. The Montauk ferry is almost 2 miles away at New Harbor. Taxi is $10 one way.
