“Truly incredible experience - should be six stars”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

My wife and I just came back from five wonderful nights at the Spring House Hotel. The staff could not have been friendlier nor more attentive. Every need was taken care of efficiently, with a smile and some fun conversation. The food and drinks were fabulous (gourmet on both accounts and well executed). It sits on a picture perfect bluff with a wonderful verandah that has a great bar and outside dining tables as well. The Adirondack chairs on the sprawling lawns have an incredible view and tapas and drink service is available in the late afternoon/early evening. We stayed for Martini Night on Thursday which was a fun experience (nice crowd, nice band). As far as accomodations go, the rooms were delightfully authentic period-resort decor with nicely appointed modern bathrooms. Of course there is no air conditioning (it's a period-perfect resort with great breezes, air conditioning would spoil the appeal (shame on those who complain about that)). The main lobby, sweeping staircase, fine-dining restaurant and bistro-bar were perfect and it was like stepping back in time to a kinder, gentler era. The outside fine dining terrace was stunning with a menu to match. Even with it's classic period-resort elegance, there is a relaxed vibe that makes you feel immediately like you came home to an old friend. It is truly the grand dame of Block Island hotels and rules the top of the island like the queen she is.

This was our first visit to Block Island and friends had raved about their stay at Spring House Hotel, so we thought we'd give it a try. From the moment we walked up the road and saw the views, we new we were going to love it. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and very informative about the island. First night there we had drinks on the lawn in the famous white chairs and admired the views, followed by dinner on the veranda. Our waiter, Nathan was very attentive and made us feel most welcomed. In fact, during our week stay, he provided us with a list of "must see" . . . everything he suggested was fabulous! A beautiful island, warm and cozy hotel, spectacular views and the most friendly people. We won't hesitate to book our next visit on the island at the Spring House!!!

Room Tip: We were on the 3rd floor and had a view of the ocean . . . breath taking views!

We have been coming to Block Island for years and always loved the Spring House. When we got engaged in December we didn't think that we would be able to lock in the Spring House for summer 2013 wedding but they had our date and we booked. We were just married at the Spring House overlooking the water on the front lawn on August 3, 2013. It was AMAZING. Everything was perfect and we couldn't have done ANY of it without Danielle Dziok. She was not only helpful and kind but went above and beyond to make our day perfect. We had our cocktail hour out on the covered porch and the reception was in the dining room for dinner and the outside patio for dancing. If you are looking for a place to get married on Block Island, look no further. We will continue to come to the Spring House year after year. Thank you Danielle!

The worst experience we have had to date!!!! My husband and I were at the Spring House for just 1 night and we will never go back. The staff was awful to begin with. When a Sambuco Romano was ordered, clearly a stock brand was given in its place & never fessed up to it. I would like to say the breakfast was awful, but we never ate it. After waiting in a dining room for over 30 or 40 min to get served, when the food (nothing elaborate) arrived, it was both way over cooked and Cold. We couldn't eat it. We could never find anyone at the front desk. There was no communication between the staff members. It was just an overall bad experience & we wrote that on the comment card but had a funny feeling that card would never reach the administration, but would it make a difference????
Since I check trip advisor when we travel & dine out, I felt compelled to write this review. I have never written one but feel very strongly about the way we were treated & the overall unpleasant experience.

Room Tip: Check trip advisor & don't go to the spring house. We wound up getting breakfast at the 166...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Spring House Hotel, built in 1852, is Block Island's largest and oldest hotel. Set atop a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean as well as the spring from which we take our name, the property provides views which cannot be beat. Being a ten minute walk from Old Harbor, the Spring House provides an oasis which can be enjoyed from our Adirondack chairs, wrap-around porch, and East overlook patio. Great pride is taken in our seed-to-table mission in both of our two on-site restaurants. Three gardens and a greenhouse provide fresh produce creating delicious dining options on both our Dining Room and Bistro menus. Simply choose your preference of formal or casual food and setting upon arrival. Indoor and outdoor seating is available for both. Between the Main Building and the Mott House (an Annex Building located 20 yards away), there are 50 hotel rooms to rent, ranging from 1-bed standards up to studios and suites. Two apartments and four houses are also available to rent on property, as well as off-property Town Homes. Block Island thrives during the summer, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. During this time, all of the above-listed dining and hotel options are available. Outside of this time frame, the Dining Room menu is closed. The Bistro menu remains open along with the Main Building Hotel from April through October. The Spring House Hotel provides a beautiful setting for weddings and special events which are frequently hosted on the weekends. In the effort to provide our nuptial couples the exclusive setting, our food and beverage outlets may be closed during these events. During the off-season (November-April), the Main Building Hotel is closed and only our Barn Suites and Houses are available for rent. Last winter was the grand opening of The Barn Restaurant, providing an intimate dining experience Wednesdays-Sundays for dinner only. The restaurant, fitting only 30-35 patrons, features an open-concept kitchen and a truly unique experience. ... more   less
