I read all the reviews on here for B&Bs on BI before booking at the 1661 Inn. We have never stayed at a B&B before and were looking for a romantic getaway. We stayed in the Staples room and was able to negiotate the price down because our stay was between low and high season. Our room was everything it was promised to be. The view was amazing, the room was clean and homey and the hotel was quiet and relaxing. I miss the huge jacuzzi tub already. Check in took only a moment and my boyfriend was in heaven with the huge breakfast spread. They also have coffee and tea available all the time, we poured them into the to go cups and were able to take them with us on our morning walks. We will absolutely stay at this inn, in that room everytime we go back to BI.

We stayed in the 1661 house/Ball room. While the view was beautiful, our room was less than desirable. The furniture was outdated (I'm not referring to antiques here) and the bathroom is horrendous! It looked like it was last updated in the 1970s.

Our room had no window screens so we were forced to sleep with the windows wide open. I should also note that our window had no lock. To further add to our frustration, we were trying to sleep but our neighbors were outside on their patio at 11:30pm talking very loudly. We called the front desk twice to see if someone could call their room and ask them to keep it down but no one ever contacted them. I had the unfortunate task of having to ask them to quiet down which left me in a very bad position.

This room is absolutely not worth $320/night---while we got the room for a reduced rate, we still paid too much considering what we received in return.

This was a typical New England Inn and it was exactly what we expected. The hotel is located just steps from the Ferry in Old Harbor. We stayed in the Palmetto room and it was clean and comfortable. The wine and cheese and champagne breakfast were all served at the 1661, which is about 40 yards down the street. The staff at both places was extremely nice and gave us very good suggestions.
The room was very cozy and we loved that there was no TV. It was a true Inn experience!!

Right from the start, I knew our 2-night stay in the Alice May Room in Dodge Cottage (part of the Manisses Hotel and 1661 Inn) was going to be a good one. Loreen at the front desk was so nice on the phone...she told me about the new September specials and helped me select a room. Upon arrival in Block Island, my husband and I walked our bikes and backpacks from the ferry terminal (I highly recommend the high-speed ferry from Point Judith - only 30 minutes dock to dock) to the Manisses Lobby, checked in with friendly Felix, and proceeded to Dodge Cottage. There was a bike rack for our bikes right in front of the cottage. To get to our room from the front entrance of the cottage, we had to go up and down several stairs, and walk down several hallways to reach our room. Using the back entrance was much easier - walk down the stone driveway, climb up a few stairs onto a back deck, and the room was right there. About the cottage - it's cute, Victorian, and charming - it is an old building which could use some new paint. Inside the cottage, we found a room which was clean, spacious, and comfortable - we had hardwood floors, a queen size bed, kitchenette, and private bath. There are many windows, which make the room sunny and bright...the room darkening shades are a great feature, but seemed to be quite old, however, they served their purpose. The bed was firm and we slept very well! Dodge cottage has a great location - close to town, and presents a great value. Our rate included wine and nibble hour in a window-filled room overlooking the ocean (outdoor seating was available). The wine was fine, and so were the nibbles: fruit, cheese, crackers, veggies, dips on buffet table, and butler-passed mini hotdogs. Breakfast buffet (also included in our room rate) was outstanding! Juice, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, champagne, omelettes cooked to order, french toast, fresh fruit, pastries, bluefish, potatoes, baked beans, and more, all enjoyed overlooking the ocean! While on Block Island, we explored the Mohegan Bluffs and the Southern Lighthouse - don't miss walking down the 400 steps to the rocky coastline...wear hiking shoes and bring your camera - it's beautiful! Bring your raingear in case it pours like it did when we were there - get outside anyway, cause Block Island is beautiful, even with cloudy skies! Eat at Ely's - casual, intimate atmosphere and delicious creative cuisine. We're definitely going back to Block Island and when we do, we'll stay in Alice May!

I recently read some reviews and was saddened by the negative feedback. My family and I have stayed at the 1661 Inn (including the Dodge Cottage for the past 3 years now and we've had great experiences. We go in the off season when the island is less busy and the staff is always pleasant and helpful and our rooms have been great. Kadian and Loreen are wonderful at the front desk and Felix is so kind and friendly.

The Edwards room is spacious with a nice deck and the jacuzzi in the loft is great. The Ackurs room is wonderful too with a kitchenette and wrap around deck (both with nice ocean views)
We have 2 young children and those rooms are perfect.

You must take advantage of the complimentary wine and nibble hour 4:30-5:30 on the deck where I've seen them serve up simple fare like chips and salsa to cheese and crackers w fruit ,but I've also experienced some nice hors d oeuvres as well.
We love the buffet breakfast with the omellete station, champagne bar and wonderful array of breads, muffins, cereal, fruit, and of course the amazing blue fish, if available. Don't be intimidated by the display with the entire body of the fish and do try it even if it is picked over. It's delicious and starts your day off great.

We like the location as it's a nice walk to town close to shops etc (so you don't need a car) and we enjoy visiting the animal farm behind Hotel Mannises and the nice gardens too.
It's open year round and I think it's worth every penny especially for what they offer.
We've stayed at the large Katherine Sullivan room at the Dodge Cottage which is closer to town but a bit noisy as well. I loved the size of the room for our family and the kitchen had french doors so you could easily put a pack n play in there .
The only complaint I have is that I was uncomfortable with the close proximity of a rented apartment (to their hotel staff members) below our room. WE also didn't appreciate when they smoked outside (our room is non-smoking) but other than that we love staying at the 1661 Inn and will continue to do so especially since they offer the "bucks"
