Right from the start, I knew our 2-night stay in the Alice May Room in Dodge Cottage (part of the Manisses Hotel and 1661 Inn) was going to be a good one. Loreen at the front desk was so nice on the phone...she told me about the new September specials and helped me select a room. Upon arrival in Block Island, my husband and I walked our bikes and backpacks from the ferry terminal (I highly recommend the high-speed ferry from Point Judith - only 30 minutes dock to dock) to the Manisses Lobby, checked in with friendly Felix, and proceeded to Dodge Cottage. There was a bike rack for our bikes right in front of the cottage. To get to our room from the front entrance of the cottage, we had to go up and down several stairs, and walk down several hallways to reach our room. Using the back entrance was much easier - walk down the stone driveway, climb up a few stairs onto a back deck, and the room was right there. About the cottage - it's cute, Victorian, and charming - it is an old building which could use some new paint. Inside the cottage, we found a room which was clean, spacious, and comfortable - we had hardwood floors, a queen size bed, kitchenette, and private bath. There are many windows, which make the room sunny and bright...the room darkening shades are a great feature, but seemed to be quite old, however, they served their purpose. The bed was firm and we slept very well! Dodge cottage has a great location - close to town, and presents a great value. Our rate included wine and nibble hour in a window-filled room overlooking the ocean (outdoor seating was available). The wine was fine, and so were the nibbles: fruit, cheese, crackers, veggies, dips on buffet table, and butler-passed mini hotdogs. Breakfast buffet (also included in our room rate) was outstanding! Juice, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, champagne, omelettes cooked to order, french toast, fresh fruit, pastries, bluefish, potatoes, baked beans, and more, all enjoyed overlooking the ocean! While on Block Island, we explored the Mohegan Bluffs and the Southern Lighthouse - don't miss walking down the 400 steps to the rocky coastline...wear hiking shoes and bring your camera - it's beautiful! Bring your raingear in case it pours like it did when we were there - get outside anyway, cause Block Island is beautiful, even with cloudy skies! Eat at Ely's - casual, intimate atmosphere and delicious creative cuisine. We're definitely going back to Block Island and when we do, we'll stay in Alice May!
