We have been here many times throughout the years and have never been disappointed. We are foodies from center city, knowleageable and demanding about food and service. Bona Cucina is like being invited into your best Italian friends home for dinner only better because Pasquale has a way with fish and seafood your Nonna never gave you.
Frankie, his wife, is at the front of the house at this plain unassuming neighborhood restaurant. Those of us from certain neighborhoods know Frankie is a girls name, not just a guys. So forget that thought.
Kim, their beautiful daughter was our server.
It seems silly to say order anything because it will be great, because it will, so I will take you through it. We started with the crab stuffed mushrooms, grilled red peppers with sharp cheese chunks, stuffed Portabella mushrooms with sausage, and some garlic bread.
Wow! You can make a meal from these appetizers...but don't.
It's byob, so we are having glasses of good wine, animated conversation, and this wonderful food. The room is filled with people of all ages. There are lovers at one table and friends at an other.
Main courses get even better than appetizers. Orange Roughy, a quiet white fish enhanced with a light tomato basil sauce and lumps of crabmeat . You could die and go to heaven and have not a regret. Crabcakes without having to go to any top restaurant in Baltimore or the rest of Maryland to get a taste of the very best. Veal was had two different ways, forgetaboutit, too good to write about or explain.
We sat, we talked, we ate, we had more wine. We found room for desert.
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli. Or even the cheesecake or another desert.
In the background all through the dinner never intruding but quietly punctuating the ambiance are the sounds of Sinatra, Dean Martin, and the like.
This is good modern American Italian food presented to you by a good Italian American family that makes you feel at home. In my opinion, you just cannot go wrong here.
We had a feast with a variety of appetizers, main course, deserts, coffee, including a 20% tip... $41 per person. byob and cash only, no credit cards.
