“Ride in the Dining Car!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

We visited Lancaster with our train obsessed 2 and 6 year old boys. I had a feeling this might be a bit of a tourist rip off, but my boys insisted we had to ride on the train, so we decided to mix it up a bit from your typical train ride and get tickets for lunch in the dining car. It did cost us close to $100 for tickets and a "hobo" style lunch, but it was a fun experience getting to ride in a dining car and the lunch was suprisingly good (fresh made lemonade, sandwich of choice, we had the philly cheese steak which was good, and a cookie). The ride goes 20-30 minutes down the track, then turns around and heads back to the station down the same track. If riding in a regular coach car this could've potentially been rather boring, but lunch in the dining car did make it a fun experience. There are also several train gift shops to browse at the station, and the RR Museum of PA is right across the street (although we didn't have time to check this out)

“Good learning experience for all ages”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Took my family from Texas there in June. We rode in the Open Car....they loved it. It was a nice day out.....alot of Amish/Old Order Mennonites were around. It was my grandneices/nephews first trip on the Strasburg RR. They still talk about it.

“Fun for kids”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Most of us spend our day to day lives feeling pulled in a thousand directions, and almost everyone I meet classifies themselves as a “busy” person. When it’s time to get away, scenic Lancaster, PA is one of the best places for a slower paced, laid back atmosphere to unwind in a family friendly environment. There is plenty to do (and eat), but you will never feel overwhelmed, rushed, or hurried. These are some of our favorite Amish-inspired destinations in Lancaster, one of our favorite places to spend time as a family.

The Strasburg Railroad is the home to many restored trains from around the USA. Many train fanatics call this site the best historic railroad in America for visitors, and for good reason. Recognized as one of the most significant historic railroads in the USA, the Strasburg Railroad has acquired historic trains from all over the country, and recently celebrated operating for 50 years as a tourist railroad It is one of the remaining stations where you and your family can ride the refurbished trains and steam engines. This station is large, restored, and maintained beautifully- a source of pride for the local people. Every time we visit, we truly sense the enjoyment that the conductors and employees have for their jobs- it shines though as they take their time with every child, posing for photos and answering train trivia with a smile. As you ride the beautifully restored trains through Amish country, learning about steam railroading, agriculture, Amish culture and Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, enjoy your family and your little ones, and let worries slip away. They are little for only so long, and riding in a “real” train is going to be a real delight.

“Must really enjoy trains or have kids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

I love trains, my husband does not. He enjoyed the ride on the train, in first class, but did not enjoy the museum. He was bored out of his mind. I would have enjoyed it more if he had something to do

“Great way to spend a day!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

The Strasburg Rail Road is a must see when in Lancaster County. The train is pulled by an old steam locomotive through many amish farmlands. The passenger cars are in excellent condition, and the staff is very friendly! While at the railroad, there are even more things to do! Including a miniature train the travels through the yards, several gift shops, a few snack shops, and The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania located across the street. A must see in Lacaster County!
