“Tried to Change our Rate once We arrived!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

We stayed at the Toftrees from May 2, 2012 through May 4 2013 in order to pack up our daughters from their freshman year at Penn State. We were aware that it was graduation weekend and that the town was quite full. Upon check in we were told that our 2nd night would not be the $109 rate which was quoted and displayed on our Toftrees confirmation which was presented at checkin, but instead it would be $398. We checked in and said that we would not pay the $398 for the second night and that the hotel could not just change the rate on us. The front desk person said they would check with the manager. Our first room had several wasps both dead and alive around the window area. We requested a change of room and were eventually provided a different room. We were upset about where we would stay if the hotel would not agree to meet the price on the confirmation since we knew many hotels were sold out. At 1030 pm we received a call in our room from the front desk telling us that the manager was firm and the price was $398 for the second night. We were told that the manager would be there in the morning if we wanted to discuss it further. First thing in the morning we confronted the manager and we were told that the hotel has the discretion to change the rate even though we were given a confirmation and they took my credit card. A long drawn out discussion was had and I became very angry, however the other mother who was with me to pack up her daughter convinced the manager to ask a higher manager to review the situation. We left to get breakfast and were told we would receive a call in an hour. We did receive a call within 30 minutes saying that the executive manager agreed to the rate on our confirmation and wanted to buy us breakfast. Too little too late. Appararently, one of their employees gave us the wrong rate since the hotels were much higher for graduation weekend but this is not our problem, the hotel should have taken the loss not us. Upon checkout, we were told sorry about the little misunderstanding. This was not a misunderstanding, this was the most ourageous conduct I have ever experienced at a hotel. I would never stay at the Toftrees again. The mangement needs to train their front desk manager so something like this doesn't happen again.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience. We understand the frustration you went through in order to get what was confirmed. We hope that you do understand mistakes do take place from time to time and that we do stand behind the things that we guarantee. thus the reason for honoring the rate that was confirmed. It is not everyday that situations like this arise and thus the need to step back for just a few minutes and review what happened and double check with the staff that made the decision. We apologize that this caused some confusion and some inconvenience to your stay and hope that we can count on your business for the next couple years while your child is attending school at Penn State.

While the propery itseld is ok and the golf course nice we left with a bad feeling as we felt we were taken advantage of. Having had to book this hotel 1 year in advance as there were really no gigs left in town for a Penn State Graduation we were charged $450/night. Room was ok, small, slightly outdated, right next to the check in desk. For this rate, you would think maybe a golf couse view was in order, but no way. Normal rate for this room, as I just checked is about $152/night. But they decided to hit us in the head! For that reason I can not recommend that anyone stay here. Wish I could , as overall, it's a bit tired , needs a new front door ,but decent enough. Toftrees you should be ashamed!!

Room Tip: Stay in an upper floor.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience at Toftrees Golf Resort and Conference Center. We do understand the concern about raising rates for events such as Graduation weekend however we do let our guests know those rates 1 year in advance and allow them to shop around for any such deals they so please. We hope that as a guest you understand that many hotels in the area are able to stay in business year after year allowing the conveniece of staying a mere 4 miles from Campus due to rates that are incurred on weekends such as Graduation or home football games. While our intent is never to pretend to be something we are not, we do our best to offer the most sincere service and attention to each and every guest that comes on property. Without rate increases on weekends like this many travellers would find themselves travelling another 45-60 miles to find a place to stay for Graduation or home football games due to the fierce competition for every other piece of business that comes to town the other 363 days a year. We hope that you will have the time to come back to State College at some point and see Toftrees for the true beauty that it was designed to be!

We booked Toftrees approximately 9 months prior to our arrival for college graduation. We were charged almost $900.00 for a two night stay! Keep in mind, the regular price for the poor room that we were given is $129.00 per night. The room was small, dated and old. We had two double beds, NO closet in the room, but a "makeshift" closet in the bathroom. Two of the lights didn't work. The air conditioning was old and we had better results for cool air opening the sliding door that led to the balcony.

Our room was on the 2nd floor and we had to take two flights of stairs as there was no elevator or a handicap ramp to access the second floor. Although we were able to walk the stairs without difficulty, we encountered an elderly gentleman that had a very difficult time doing so.

POOR at best! We will never recommend Tofttrees!!!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay during our very busy graduation weekend. We do understand the concern about raising our rates for special events such as football games and graduation weekends, however this is due to the lack of demand in the area as well as the lack of business that travels to the area on a consistent basis. Should many hotels not protect their assets in generating revenues on weekends such as graduation we would find that many hotels would not be able to stay in business year after year as they would be profitless operations. We tend to follow the trend of the other hotels in the area when it comes to setting rates and understand this may seem unfair the fact remains that without these hotels here in town guests would be traveling 45-60 miles outside of town to find hotel rooms. While our hotel is 40 years old and does not offer every modernization that newer hotels do we feel that we fairly represent our hotel with our information online and upon phone calls to the hotel and hope that guests will come back and enjoy some time here on dates that are not busy or hectic to allow some time to see the true beauty that is Toftrees.

I only wish I had found this place earlier. I have had a child at Penn State for 4 years and in that time I have stayed in chain hotels and local places alike and wish I'd known about this place.
Just a few miles from downtown but a world away;quiet at night, an adequate dining faclility and a bar all without getting in your car and looking for parking.
. Many places in State College are hotels but you go elsewhere for everything else. Also a great rate, clean rooms, friendly staff.
I would definitely recommend, especially if you golf, play tennis or want to run.

Called to make reservations talked to Erica and she was great she up graded our stay to the king suite. That was awesome she was a great person to deal with over the phone very polite. Then when we arrived I believe it was Kristen who checked us in and she was great as well. We then headed to the restaurant/ bar to have a drink before we ate Bethany was the bartender and then was our waitress for our Valentine's dinner she was great as well. This is a very friendly place to stay and can't wait to stay there again. Thank you for a great stay.

we stayed here on thanksgiving, and would have stayed for the football weekend except the price for the room went up hundreds of dollars, and honestly, the rooms just aren't that nice. There isn't anything wrong with this place, and the people working there are very nice, and the rooms are clean, but it isn't a super nice place. The beds are small and uncomfortable, and everything is a bit dated. Do yourself a favor and stay at the our fair lady bed and breakfast in bellefont. No price change for football weekends, close to state college, delicious home cooked breakfast, and comfortable beds.

Thank you for taking the time to review our Resort after your visit. We realize guests are looking for a great price and a great place to stay when spending your hard earned money and we do our best to provide this on a consistent basis. We also realize we are not the most modern place to stay in town but feel that our Resort provides many great features starting with a quiet, clean and comfortable place to stay. During the Spring, Summer and Fall months the views are breathtaking as well with the natural setting on the Golf Course. When determining our price for rates we tend to follow the trend in State College and unfortunately businesses in town are able to remain open year round due the revenues that are brought in by the University during high demand times such as the Football weekends. Without these weekends businesses in the area would not have enough demand to stay open on a consistent year round basis. We hope that you understand our position and hope that we can accomodate you again at a time when the prices and demand are in line with your needs.
