We stayed at the Toftrees from May 2, 2012 through May 4 2013 in order to pack up our daughters from their freshman year at Penn State. We were aware that it was graduation weekend and that the town was quite full. Upon check in we were told that our 2nd night would not be the $109 rate which was quoted and displayed on our Toftrees confirmation which was presented at checkin, but instead it would be $398. We checked in and said that we would not pay the $398 for the second night and that the hotel could not just change the rate on us. The front desk person said they would check with the manager. Our first room had several wasps both dead and alive around the window area. We requested a change of room and were eventually provided a different room. We were upset about where we would stay if the hotel would not agree to meet the price on the confirmation since we knew many hotels were sold out. At 1030 pm we received a call in our room from the front desk telling us that the manager was firm and the price was $398 for the second night. We were told that the manager would be there in the morning if we wanted to discuss it further. First thing in the morning we confronted the manager and we were told that the hotel has the discretion to change the rate even though we were given a confirmation and they took my credit card. A long drawn out discussion was had and I became very angry, however the other mother who was with me to pack up her daughter convinced the manager to ask a higher manager to review the situation. We left to get breakfast and were told we would receive a call in an hour. We did receive a call within 30 minutes saying that the executive manager agreed to the rate on our confirmation and wanted to buy us breakfast. Too little too late. Appararently, one of their employees gave us the wrong rate since the hotels were much higher for graduation weekend but this is not our problem, the hotel should have taken the loss not us. Upon checkout, we were told sorry about the little misunderstanding. This was not a misunderstanding, this was the most ourageous conduct I have ever experienced at a hotel. I would never stay at the Toftrees again. The mangement needs to train their front desk manager so something like this doesn't happen again.
