Having eaten at the excellent Faccia Luna (FL) several times, and having read the Luna 2 (L2) reviews ranging from mediocre to incendiary, I wasn't expecting much from this offshoot restaurant. Maybe that's why I was so pleasantly surprised. No, I wasn't overwhelmed, but the pizza (primary meal choice at both FL and L2), at least in the half dozen or so times I've been to each place, is pretty comparable, which is a compliment to Luna 2. From some reviews I've read on here and elsewhere it sometimes sounds like they're two radically different places, but they're not, at least IMO. I'd give a slight edge to FL due to the consistent quality among the various types of pies, but if you're closer to Luna 2, as I am, then L2 is an excellent substitute.
That said, and this applies to both FL and L2, I am less impressed with their non-Italian entrees. I've tried the fresh fish offered at both places (raved about in one review I read for FL), but they were underwhelming at best. I did like the Spaghetti Carbonara from L2, as well as the Italian Wedding soup (very good, though far from the best I've had) at FL and the salads at both locations (though the antipasto, while fresh, was overpriced and disappointing due to its distinct lack of..."stuff"). The Spaghetti Carbonara had big chunks of crispy pancetta and the "sauce" was Michelle Hazan style, i.e. traditional, or at least what my non-Italian self thinks of as traditional. The strands of pasta soaked up the cheesy, but not too heavy, sauce very well, so I'd give it a big thumbs up, though I was disappointed in the portion size considering the $15 price tag.
So personally, if you want a very good pizza in the State College area I'd say you can't go wrong at L2 despite the sometimes scathing reviews. I'd also say that based on my personal tastes and early experiences, stick with the Italian dishes at both FL and L2, pizza or otherwise.
One final note: both locations serve a gluten free pizza, which my wife requires. While she says overall it's very good, though not memorable, it's better than other GF options she's tried at other places (in terms of entrees that are typically not GF).
