“Like the HoJo's of the '70s, but no food”

Howard Johnson Philadelphia International Airport Springfield

Dec 10, 2007

Our two-night stay was perfectly adequate. Everything was clean and the lights and plumbing all worked. Free parking outside the room, and ice and vending machines provide the only refreshment. It is easy to forget that 30 years ago nearly all motels were like this.
We now expect a TV screen that welcomes us by name on arrival, fluffy bathrobes in the wardrobe and chocolates on the pillow. There is none of that, but who needs it?
What this HoJos lacked, however, was a restaurant. The on-site restaurant space has been rented out to an independent proprietor, who claims to open for breakfast at 8, which seems late for a motel. But by the time we gave up at 8:20 am, the restuarant was still locked, with the impatient cook standing outside assuring us that the boss would be there any minute. Lord knows how long after that it would have taken to get any food! There are plenty of restaurants nearby, but no real breakfast places, so this was a problem.
Whatever housekeeping problems the place had before seem to be under control. And if the B&Bs in Swarthmore are full, there's not a better alternative for miles around.

While our hotel does not offer breakfast services the restaurant next door is open at 8 am for breakfast (This is the first time I have heard of it not being open at that time, but it is not ours so we cannot control it) there is also a Denny's, IHOP, and several chain restaurants within 1 ½ miles of the hotel.

My daughter and I were in the area, checking out the surrounding colleges and needed a place to stay. We were pleasantly surprised how well the front desk gave directions and the knowledge they had regarding the surrounding area to help us find there location. Upon checking in the front desk was very
pleasant and helpful. Our room was very clean and smelled really good: I am really sensitive to smoke smell due to allergies.
My daughter liked all the ammenities that this hotel offered, especially the in room coffee and wi-fi. I read other write-ups about this Hotel and can't believe the negative remarks, this Hotel looks new in it's decor and the staff is very accomodating.
I would recommend this place to anyone and would definitely visit this Hotel again in the future. The prices are comparible to other Hotels and has access to stores.

“You Get What You Pay For...”

Howard Johnson Philadelphia International Airport Springfield

Well, c'mon -- it's a HoJo, on a busy highway in a strip-mall area, where a room cost $89/night. If you're expecting the Ritz-Carlton, that's not a reasonable expectation...

We chose this place because Swarthmore College's admission office said it was the closest hotel. We stayed here for one night during a two-night stay, and it was pretty much what we expected.

It seemed mostly clean, although I'll admit I didn't want to look too hard. The wi-fi worked fine in our room, although the desk clerk told us when we checked in that the property's router was problematic and iffy.

Were the linens scratchy and coarse? Were the towels thin? Yes, for the most part that's all true -- but this hotel (sorry, motel) is what it is, and doesn't pretend to be anything else. Since we had no experience bad enough to complain to management, I can't speak to the indifference/helpfulness, but I'd have to say that all in all, it's pretty much what we expected for $89.

“Dirty Sheets!”

As part of a wedding, we checked in to our room, and had time only to put our suitcase in the room, brush our teeth and leave. When we returned late that night (1:00am), we got ready for bed-- and stopped there. When we turned down the sheets, we saw dirt and what looked like marks that someone's dirty feet made at the bottom of the sheets! I don't blame the yucky-footed guest before us, but I do blame the hotel for giving us a room where the sheets hadn't been changed. On closer inspection, we found 2 used tissues on the floor that had been covered up by the bedspread. We were exhausted, and called the front desk to get a change of sheets. The desk worker had no access to any housekeeping supplies, and after some time agreed to let us change rooms. The sheets were clean, but the bathroom floor had hairs and a dead fly. Ick. My husband and I slept with as many clothes on as possible and never took off our socks. We were totally grossed out.

When we checked out the next morning, the manager was "unavailable," as he has been the 4 times since that I have called back.

If you stay here, beware. Another member of the wedding party had her valuable engagement ring stolen!

First to address the housekeeping issues we have for the most part all new staff most importantly a new head housekeeper. Our hotel saw the need for change and took action, and has gotten rid of anyone who was unable to work up to par. That includes all of the issues this guest references regarding housekeeping. We strive everyday to do our best for all of our guests, and complaints as well as compliments let us know what we are doing right, and what we need to change. While this review is a perfect example of that I must mention that the statement regarding someones ring being stolen is not fair. It is a shame that the possibilty of someone misplacing it or losing it somewhere else is never mentioned. It should not be automatic if you leave something in a hotel to assume that the housekeeper has stolen it, and no one ever comments back on these postings when they end up finding what was "stolen" from them.

“Worst hotel that I have ever experienced”

This was the worst room that I have ever stayed in, especially given the price.
We ordered a non-smoking room and there was an aroma of smoke permeating in the room.
The bathroom had pubic heair and feces on the side of toilet.
The bathroom tole looked like it hadn't been mopped in days. There was coffee stains on the floor separator.
We stayed there for two nights and the maid left garbage in front of the door while she was cleaning other rooms. She falied to give us towels.
I would suggest better training for the maids and ensure that proper supervision of evaluating the room once it has been cleaned should ensue. I would also suggest that the hotel chain become more environmentally consious about recycling, reuse of towels/sheets and cups, to prevent wastefulness.

We have addressed all of these issues and have nearly a whole new staff in housekeeping including a new head housekeeper. We expect all of guests to have a comfortable and clean room, and we now do a welcome call approx. 15 mins after check in to ensure that you have had a chance to check your room and make sure it is as you and we expect it to be this includes your smoking preference.
