Our two-night stay was perfectly adequate. Everything was clean and the lights and plumbing all worked. Free parking outside the room, and ice and vending machines provide the only refreshment. It is easy to forget that 30 years ago nearly all motels were like this.
We now expect a TV screen that welcomes us by name on arrival, fluffy bathrobes in the wardrobe and chocolates on the pillow. There is none of that, but who needs it?
What this HoJos lacked, however, was a restaurant. The on-site restaurant space has been rented out to an independent proprietor, who claims to open for breakfast at 8, which seems late for a motel. But by the time we gave up at 8:20 am, the restuarant was still locked, with the impatient cook standing outside assuring us that the boss would be there any minute. Lord knows how long after that it would have taken to get any food! There are plenty of restaurants nearby, but no real breakfast places, so this was a problem.
Whatever housekeeping problems the place had before seem to be under control. And if the B&Bs in Swarthmore are full, there's not a better alternative for miles around.
