The classic american roadside motel is a dying breed, which still lives on in places like Smethport. The Smethport motel is a good example of this. I've stayed a couple times on business, and I don't know whether it's some sort of irony or a genuine affection for the place but I like it. On the downside, the rooms are a couple decades out of style. One of them, in fact, I could have furnished from a thrift store. But they were clean, and comfortable, though the sheets were thin (and the matress was too). The other room I stayed in was quite decently sized and better maintained. The bathrooms are enormous, and have a window, which may not seem like much, but makes it feel less like a motel. There's no breakfast, but the drive-in next door is, well, right next door, and the place is conveniently located. I can't really explain why I enjoyed staying here, except that it feels kinda like staying in the guest room of a favorite elderly relative: shabby but hospitable.
All rooms face the road, are on the ground floor, and have access directly to vehicles.
