“Excellent place to stay for Great Alleghany Passage cyclists”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

What a great place! We are a group of families (8 adults and 9 kids) who biked from Cumberland to Ohiopyle on the Great Alleghany Passage. Needed a place to sleep and there aren't many options for a group this size. We contacted the owners of the Hostel on Main and they could not have been more helpful. When we got here after a long day of biking uphill with tired kids we were thrilled. Super Super clean. (spartan, kind of, but thats great). Clean sheets on all beds so we did not need sleeping bags, just a light blanket. AC. Fans. porch to watch the trains go by. They are loud btw. Washer and Dryer!! Fridge!! PIzza place next door. we still talk about how much we all liked it. perfect for those wanting to bike the GAP in either direction. worth the extra few miles from meyersdale.

Room Tip: There are 3 rooms total. A big bunk room with 12 bunks, and then 2 rooms with 6 bunks each. I woul...

June 2013 we rode the Gap and C&O heading east from Pittsburgh. We rotated our nights between camping, hostels, and one hotel night. While there is not much to do in Rockwood, we found our stop to be a very pleasant experience!

You must use the booster cell station on the trail to make phone calls. No service at the hostel!

You check in at the Rockwood Mill Shoppes store/restaurant right across the street from the hostel. We passed through town on a Monday and one restaurant in town is closed on Monday. Our only option appeared to be at the Mill Shoppe. Our food options were already limited since we are vegans, luckily the pizza dough was vegan...and actually we couldn't believe how good it was. We took our pizza, a few beers and lounged on the back patio and watched the trains go by...yes, frequently traveled tracks. The next day we discovered that the store had dried pasta and sauce, so we could have actually whipped up a dinner ourselves too. The store/restaurant was lacking fresh fruit, so breakfast for vegans was limited.....but filled with delicious looking bakery!

The actual hostel is great. Since this was our first hostel experience and we weren't sure what to expect, we paid a little extra for the private room. We chose the small front room. It turns out we were the only people to stay there this night!

Three large clean bathrooms. A few bathroom supplies shampoo etc were there but were probably from prior guest. Rooms are very basic but clean. Mattresses are thinner, but slept like a rock. Clean sheets provided. Towels were available for an additional fee. The living room has a mix of older furniture but it would accommodate a larger group if there was one there. Full size fridge, microwave, dishes, but I don't recall a stove. Coin washer/dryer clean.

The place to store the bikes is under the house in a basement. There is no lock on the door but a rack to lock your bike too. We didn't feel very secure leaving our very expensive bikes there, so hopefully someday they will get a lock on the door.

The building itself is very old and has historical charm. Painted wood floors, high tin ceilings. I liked it! The walls are thin and unfortunately when we laid down to sleep we could hear the neighbors fighting. Earplugs or noise canceling headphones are always great on a trip....trains, snoring friends, etc.

You can't beat the price. Hostels are nice to share stories with others out on their epic adventures! I would definitely enjoy staying here again!

Four of us stayed in a private room on our thru-bike trip from Pittsburgh to DC, May 2013. Very clean and bike friendly. Washer, dryer, large kitchen, newly remodeled bathrooms. As an AT thru hiker, having sheets, blankets, and pillows was not expected from a "hostel." Could stumble out of bed in the morning, walk 100 yards to the Mill Shoppes for coffee and danish, and converse with the locals of this quaint town. Wonderful proprietors Terry and Judy.

Rode the bike trail from Pittsburgh to Cumberland round trip. Stayed here one night going east and one night on the westbound portion. Brand new showers, basement bike storage and nice common area. The owner also runs the restaurant one block away with great food. Free wifi but poor cell service. Trains go roaring by, but it's a rail trail so fall asleep to the sound of that lonesome whistle. Sheets and blankets available if needed.

Stopped here on my ride through the GAP. The hostel consists of one main sleeping area with perhaps 20 bunk beds and two private rooms with 3 bunks each. There's a cellar where you can park and wash your bike. Everything was very clean.

The town of Rockwood is very quiet, hardly saw anyone on the streets. Not much of a choice in bars or restaurants. The Old Mill

Negatives: The building is very close to the rail road tracks which run almost all night long. Hardly slept at all. The beds could also use blankets when nights get cool. All we got were sheets and pillow cases.

I stayed here for a night on my round trip, 300 mile bike tour of the GAP trail. I had stopped to eat in the restaurant a few days before on my way towards Cumberland and was shown the hostel after lunch. On my return I stayed one night, had dinner in the restaurant, made some new friends and had a ball! The sitting room is great, the kitchen and laundry (pay) is VERY nice and CLEAN as are the bathrooms! The place is brand new! In addition to the large, main communal sleeping room also have a few "private" rooms (6 beds) if you want your group to have their own place.
The train, which is a constant along the GAP, is VERY near and must whistle because of the road crossings. If you have been spending your nights camping along the GAP it will just be part of "your new normal" but if not then take really good earplugs!
It was a wonderful place to meet new traveling friends!
This is a GREAT place and will very gladly stay again!

This place is run by the Rockwood Mill Shops a few doors down. It is inexpensve and clean, and a fun place to stay while riding the GAP. There is indoor bike storage with an available hose and pump. There is a large central bunk room, and a few smaller bunkrooms that can be closed off to accomodate families or groups. The central bunkroom had three individual bathrooms with showers, and they were spotless. The pizza and breakfast at the Rockwood Mill Shops were both very good too.
