“Less Than Expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2012

We had not been to Green Hills Inn in probably fifteen years. For a recent birthday we decided on a return. Outside and in the place had not changed. Our first impression was the staff is young and perhaps inexperienced. Everyone was friendly and polite, and the service was not bad; just tentative, from seating through the end of the meal. Our second observation was the menus we were presented did not match the on-line menu we had reviewed before coming. This is a pet peeve of mine, plus restaurant site design in general. Once again the entree I had pre-selected was not on the menu. While the variance here was not as bad as some, there is no excuse. When will restaurants learn?

We both selected the escargot for an appetizer as neither of us had had them in quite some time. This was unfortunate. They were not bad, they simply lacked any character. Earthy snails, with earthy hazelnuts and bread crumbs just did not make for interesting flavor. For our entrees we selected the duck and the rack of lamb. The duck was delicious, as it was my wife's birthday I am glad she made the choice, it was the best dish of the evening. My rack of lamb was just that, a full rack of the largest chops I have ever seen. I ended up taking half the rack home which formed our dinner for the next evening. The only problem was they were some of the most under-seasoned, higher-end restaurant food I have tasted. Again, not bad, just uninteresting. The sides were nicely prepared. We were disappointed when presented with the dessert menu. This is not because of the choices, rather soufflé was a choice that our server had not mentioned when we placed our order. My wife would have loved this and we asked why we were not given this option when we ordered everything else. The response was that it does not take any more time than the other desserts. This comes back to the question of staff experience, or that they are made ahead of time. Either way we steered clear and shared the chocolate mousse which was good.

Overall the dinner did not meet our expectations.

“Very nice place which is unusual for Berks County.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2012 via mobile

Ate here twice in the last 3 months only one issue was the lobster bisque with crab meat had no flavor and no lobster meat, and isn't it just crab bisque? But anyway the rest of the food was terrific. Nice filet with sauce and lobster balls.

“Living on an old reputation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2011

For many years... could be more than 30... I have had the opportunity to dine and party at Green Hills. The food is normally good but in the past few years, nothing outstanding. Service is not consistent and often server's seem unprepared to work in a "fine dining" environment. Expensive and for the most part, overrated.

“Horrific”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2011

Went to a winetasting event with my best friend from law school. What a disaster! My spouse, who prefers to avoid multiple wine tastings, was promised the normal Friday night meal offering at that menu's price without any wine. She received the same lackluster courses as those provided to the winetasters and was charged an additional amount for that privilege. The food was passable at best, and the "service" was pathetic. I do not know how this place receives such high ratings, and the owners need to strive mightily for much higher quality. Until then, we won't be returning and suggest that others look for good dining elsewhere.
