“Glass Castle designed by Philip Johnson”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

This building is home to several businesses located in Pittsburgh, but it was originally commissioned, built and owned by PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass, Pittsburgh Paint & Glass, whatever...), a Fortune 200 company whose corporate headquarters still command the top floors. It is truly beautiful, but not much of a destination in & of itself (other than for architecture buffs). However, the square in the middle of the complex is a lovely place in all seasons... in the winter it has an ice skating venue where you can rent & skate around the "holiday tree", and during the other seasons it is much like a plaza in Europe, lots of tables for eating, resting & people watching. Sometimes you can find entertainment or political speakers holding court. It is very near Market Square, a great place to buy carry-out (or dine in) food, and venue for lunch time entertainment in the warmer months.

“What a beautiful building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013 via mobile

We did not go here. We just viewed the building from across the water but the architecture is absolutely wonderful with this building. You must take a look at this when you visit Pitt.

“Fun spot to visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013 via mobile

It's a great spot to take a rest. They have tables and chairs set up. You can bring a lunch or get something to go from near by Market Square or Enstein Bagels in PPG. The fountain is relaxing to watch and fun for kids to play in (check out their website for rules...like kids actually cannot wear swim suits and must wear shoes)...I just bring a change of clothes and water shoes for my 2 year old to play.
In the winter there's the skating rink and it's always decorated nicely!
There is security staff there all the time too.

“Philip Johnson's Masterpiece”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

Astonishingly, there are people who do not like PPG Place. Don't ask
me why. Philip Johnson might not be your favorite architect. PPG Industries might not be your favorite corporate. But this is one great bldg.

“Especially wonderful at Christmas time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Lovely to stroll or sit there anytime, but especially wonderful and wondrous at Christmas time. Whether ice skating on the outdoor rink (which is larger than the one at Rockefeller Center in NYC), it is a wonderful place to go. Winter Garden full of Santas of all nationalities, and the stories about them in their countries. Also performers on the stage, choirs or barbershop quartets singing or musicians of many different styles playing instruments. And a huge railroad train set up which kids, their parents and their grandparents parents all love. It's about a half block from Market Square where you can also sit or stroll or if you are hungry, find restaurants serving anything from bar food to seafood to Italian, Mexican and other ethnic food.
