“A long ways back.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014 via mobile

This no-frills restaurant started out in our Strip District, a main terminal for deliveries in and out of Pittsburgh, way back in the early 70s. The idea was to put a meal between two pieces of bread so that the truckers could eat it while on the road.
Wayback then, the steak was really a steak instead of steakem type. but the sandwiches are still delicious and unique.
My cousin who visited from California had this on his list of must do's. How he found out about these sandwiches, I'll never know. Of course, he and his family loved them.

“French Fries & Slaw”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

Home of the BIG sandwich stuffed with fries and slaw, roll up your sleeves, sample local brews, and enjoy the friendly service. Fabulous for people watching during spot weekends.

“Go for the experience, not the food!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014 via mobile

I know, I know! I've seen the Food Network shows, reviews and local comments, but I've been to the original, the suburban copies, daytime, nightime, drunk, sober, you name it! I'm not impressed! Sure, if you're from out of town, I guess you have to go, but don't expect great food! What you'll get is a big, sloppy sandwich with a maximum amount of fries, cole slaw, tomatoes and other fixin's and a bare minimum amount of meat, fish or whatever type of sandwich you ordered. The atmosphere at the original is a dive bar, not exactly family oriented, and the suburban ones are sports bar noisy. The service at both are inconsistent...enjoy!

“A piece of Pittsburgh local color. The original Primanti Restaurant.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

Primanti Brothers is a vintage slice of Pittsburgh history. Located in another desired destination for Pittsburgh travelers, the Strip district, Primanti's is noted for its delicious sandwichs loaded with french fries and served in a paper wrap. This is where all the produce came into the city and very early delivery drivers needed a great sandwich served quickly while they were unloading their trucks in the early morning hours. This is a must stop for any first time visitors to Pittsburgh.
