I work nearby and sitdown restaurant options are slim. Claddagh's menu has a good enough variety, so in theory it's a good choice for that reason. But the service is poor at best. I've probably eaten here 5 times in the past year and only once would I say the service was satisfactory, with the last 2 visits being downright bad. The first time I ate here I stood at the host station a good 5 minutes before being greeted, let alone seated. On a previous visit, I specified I wanted the lunch Shepherd's Pie. I'd never had it before so I didn't know the size differences. The bartender charged me for the dinner Shepherd's Pie and gave me grief for not saying something until I got the bill. He was awfully salty about it when I clearly specified the lunch portion.
The last visit was really bad and led me to believe that there are clearly service issues with this place. I ordered a burger and clam chowder. The bartender asked me how I wanted my burger done and I replied "medium rare." The food took a while (my coworker had a BLT, nothing elaborate) and the chowder never came out. The bartender came down to assure us that they "had a little bit of a rush, the food should be out soon." Meanwhile, there's maybe 10 people in the restaurant, and 4 visible employees. Two gentlemen down the bar who interacted with the bartender as if they were regulars, received their soup shortly after this conversation (They arrived after we'd ordered). Finally, the food arrived. I politely asked the bartender about my soup, she said "ugh, let me go yell at the kitchen." Moments later she proceeded to punch an order of soup into the POS system in plain view of me...she'd forgotten the order. I realize that stuff happens, but to pass the buck like that to cover one's own hide is not good service, especially when the customer can see it! She came back with the soup (which was bland and boring) and by that time I realized my medium rare burger was well done. I mean well done...I mean like a hockey puck, and about as grey in the center as an October Pittsburgh sky. It was edible, but certainly not enjoyable. She half-heartedly offered to send it, back and I declined because I was so darn hungry. She also replied that they're not supposed to cook burgers any rarer than medium. When I asked her why this was not specified on the menu or when I mentioned medium rare, she simply replied "let me have the manager take the soup off your bill." There was also a gentleman seated across the bar that sat a good 10 minutes before he was even greeted or given a glass of water. I chose to sit at the bar the past two times in order to catch Sportscenter on the TV. I realize that the bartenders may not be as well trained with serving as the servers are, but this is a general pattern of bad service that makes me not want to come back again. Claddagh was always a safe standby, not pricey like McCormick and Schmick's, not fast food, not Cheesecake Factory, and more variety than bd's. Unfortunately it looks like I've lost a lunch option within walking distance of work.
