“HUGE room, free shuttle, sketchy neiborhood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2007

The hotel was great, their is parking in the back (5 bucks I think) it is easy to find and the checkin was a breaze. The room was absolutely huge and tastfully decorated, looked like a JR suite at many hotels.

With a king size bed, a desk area, a small table with chairs, microwave, seperate sink, medium size fridge this is the type of room you could stay at for a week and feel like you are not squished in some sparse room. The breakfast in the morning was above average and the room it is in was very nicely decorated.

The area is sketchy to say the least. I would not advise walking anywhere near the hotel at night, it did not look safe to be out late at night. We had no problems going from the hotel to the many clubs, restaurants, and such that are about a block away. We where quick to make sure we got home and did not duck down some of the side streets. There is a free shuttle anywhere within 2 miles which I would suggest taking.

Stayed here for night night in mid-May while in town to see a Pirates game with friends at PNC Park. We had a guidance system in the car so it was very easy for us to find, right on the river in the middle of the up and coming South Side of Pittsburgh. As soon as we checked in, the staff was very friendly and helpful. They explained to us about the free shutlle that pretty much takes guests anywhere they want to go on a first come first serve basis. The room was large, two queens and a pull out couch, the view wasn't spectacular, but not a wall either. One of the best features is the shower, the pressure was outstanding, probably the best hotel shower I have ever had. The shuttle took us to drop off point right across the pedestrian bridge from PNC Park. If you have a chance, try to see a game here, the park is small but nice, it's never full so you can get great seats, and the prices are some of the best in baseball. We even took the ballpark tour the following morning, and for $6, it was fantastic. The area the hotel is in seems pretty safe, there are alot of bars for the 20-something crowd on the same street, but you don't hear any noise in the hotel. Parking was $9 in a lot behind the hotel, which was understandable for the location. The hotel features a free breakfast which was more than satisfying, I would stay here again without a doubt.

Hotel staff was rather rude blunt and did not help with directions to places to eat and see. The staff gave vague unhelpful directions or did not answer our questions at all.

The room was nice and large with not much closet space for clothes to hang-up.

There was a promise of a shuttle ride within a 2 mile radius from hotel with our reservations. The hotel had only one shuttle running for entire hotel. We often waited up to or over 30 minutes for ride. One night my husband and I were droped off and told to call back to hotel before 10:00 p.m. for ride back. When we called back promptly at 10:00 p.m.,we were told to call back later and they would let us know IF they could come pick us up. That night we ended up walking back to the room from our diner late at night through down busy streets. Taxis are not available in the city so there were no other options. The shuttle drivers recieved tips so I am sure that had an effect on the service.

Breakfast was the exact same all 4 mornings we were there with the exception of changing sausage to bacon. Breakfast was basic instant cereals and breads. Rather bland.

I would not go back to this hotel. Disappointed for the money we spent for our stay at this hotel.

Great location! Easily accessible and parking was convenient to get in and out off (which is not always the case in hotels that are in the city). Our suite was impressive and the breakfast was great. Friendly staff and easy check in/out. I highly recommend this hotel. I will definately return!!

Close to restaurants & nightlife on East Carson Street. Free shuttle within two mile radius can get you to & from most places on the South Side. Cont. breakfast very good, with omelets, fruit, cereal and cinnamon rolls. On-site parking very reasonably priced at $9/day, including all ins & outs. Excellent restaurant next door. The only drawback to this hotel is the train traffic at night, blowing their whistle as they come through town.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2006

I stayed at the HI Express Southside last in 2005 during November for a full week.

Having never travelled by myself and travelling far from home I was a little worried about the location. The fact is, Pittsburgh is beautiful, entertaining, and the people on average are extremely friendly and willing to help you if need be.

The front staff was very friendly. My flight was in early and I got to the hotel much earlier than what the scheduled check-in time was. I felt guilty about it but asked if they had a room ready, the front desk woman said at this point they were all either yet to be checked out or cleaned. She then immediately decided to phone up to some rooms to catch a cleaning person to check on the status of some of the rooms and graciously placed me in a rather spacious room with a great view. If you get a room on the "back"/west side of the hotel you will get a great view of the golden triangle and the river.

I never had a vehicle during my stay but the parking lot seemed to be rather average, not really small or extremely large, just what it needed to be.

It is also in a great location. Station Square is a short drive as is Mellon Arena and the rest of down town. The always energetic Carson Street was half a city block south of the hotel as well. There is a free shuttle that is able to take you and pick you up from downtown and station square and carson street. They also have a planned shuttle for fans to go to Mellon Arena, Heinz Field and PNC Park. The shuttle does not cross the bridge over to PNC/Heinz but leaves you at the bridge to walk across. Which really, is a great thing in itself. Its a short, brisk walk across the bridge and to the field's anyways so is of no real nusance.

The complimentary breakfast was average but everything you would really want. Choices of several cereals and the like. I was impressed. Wake up calls we always right on time. There is a business centre in the lobby that with a computer and free internet service.

There was always free coffee - or sometimes hot chocolate - for me when I was going out of in. There is also a free newspaper every morning waiting outside your door in the morning. Cleaning staff are always moving around, and were always ready to move in and clean the room every day when I would step out. They always cleaned everything they were suppose to, and nothing that they werent.

They didn't take the entire tip I left them; but I assume they didnt have much use for my loonie.... The shuttle sometimes ran a bit behind depending on who had to go where or people having to be picked up. One of the men was extremely freindly and grandpa-ish. The other was a bit more pessimistic but may just be looked at as less hospitable due to the one older mans generosity and friendliness.

Downtown/Mellon Arena, Carson Street, Station Square/The Inclines, PNC Park/Heinz Field are all within very good distance of the hotel.

Room was something I actually did phone home about. Service was great. Staff were exceptional. The trip was amazing. People/Fans were awesome, hiking/jogging was scenic, nightlife (especially during a triple-header weekend: Steelers, Panthers Football, and Penguins) was awesome as well.

Primanti's on Carson street is also only about a 6 block walk from the Hotel and if you are going to Pittsburgh you already now, is a must stop eatery.

The art scene was really impressive as well. I cant think of anything I really disliked during my stay there. Security was always on hand. Always felt very safe.

It's also a lot less expensive than what you will find down-town as well. So I think this is a hotel you must look at when booking a hotel in Pittsburgh for a night, a week, or a weekend.

  • Liked — Location, Price,
  • Disliked — Cleaning lady not taking my loonie, which was a sign of my generous Canadinan hospitality
  • Tips/Secrets — book this hotel and worry about the rest of your trip.

This hotel was very nice - quite new and in a good location for pubs, restaurants etc. The only downside is that it is situated close to a train track and the trains beep through the night because of the lack of level crossings. You kind of get used to the noise though.
