I've lived in the Pittsburgh area my entire life and not once had managed to make a visit to the aviary until now. Honestly, I was expecting to be the typical zoo-like experience: Walk through once, see the animals, get bored, and leave. What we got was totally unexpected...
It's MUCH more interesting than any zoo because many of the animals are RIGHT THERE in the room with you. No cages, no boundaries. (Obviously, for some of the more rare and/or predatory birds, there are cages and exhibits.)
My sister and I managed to witness the (free!) penguin feeding in the penguin exhibit and also paid a little extra to see one of their educational programs featuring the various birds in the aviary's care. (Interesting and fun... And fairly inexpensive.)
I absolutely fell in love with the "Grasslands" themed room and also enjoyed the "Rainforest" room.
This is definitely a great weekend activity for all ages. Please make a visit!
