“Splendid”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2009

We stayed at the inn during playoff weekend (not intentionally) and enjoyed every second of our stay. My husband and I were meeting up with family we don't get to see a lot and the inn offered us a very comfortable environment to share our quality time together.

We stayed in Emma's room. 2 very comfortable Queen Beds and a spacious dressing/bathroom worked out wonderfully for the 4 of us. The inn’s common areas are spacious and inviting.

I would defineatly recommend this inn for alternative lodging in the Pittsburgh area. It is close and convenient to all locations. Breakfast is lacking (prepackaged Danishes, cereals, yogurt) but sufficient. Plus there were no alleged “famous chocolate chip cookies.” But the hospitality of the inn keepers and comfortable atmosphere surpassed our expectations.

This was our second stay at the Inn and we will certainly be there again. While visiting family and friends in Pittsburgh, it is the perfect place to come back to relax and unwind. Both times we have stayed in the Back Suite which is a small, cozy room on the third floor. Breakfast is at leisure as it is available most of the morning, which is nice for those of us who like to sleep in. The hosts are very friendly and accomodating, offer directions and local information. We were here for New Year's and were invited by the hosts to the small party going on in the mansion which included the sounds of Auld Lang Syne and the delicious smell of the holiday meal. While we did not join them because we had other plans, we appreciated the invite. Two great attractions within walking distance are the Aviary and the Mattress Factory (installation art musuem). My husband and I really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this B&B.

Stayed one night at this lovely b&b! Will definitely be back again. We stayed in the mini suite on the third floor. It is located in a great, charming area. The area is still developing.. but it is far from raw. We felt very safe here and walked all through the neighborhood. Jeff, one of the owners gave us some great advice as far as local eateries, bars as well as different things to do in the area. He even gave us free tickets to the National Aviary Musuem rught across the street (which we really enjoyed- you must see one of the shows!) The b&b is a beautifully restored mansion. Unique, clean.... "in season" or busy nights they open up a martnini bar (gorgeous) and have a restaurant open. Neither of those were open the night we were there. The room was very comfortable and clean. This is not a ritz carlton. The room had a small tv, no huge fluffy pillows or overly soft sheets if that is what you are use to. I personally loved everything about it... so do not let any bad reviews prevent you from experiencing the wonderful little retreat with great hospitality! Breakfast in the morning was basic continental but good. Hope you give it a try! And if you do.. go to Max's the local german restaurant!

  • Liked — Unique, restored, preserved antiques and architecture
  • Disliked — No extra cover over the mattress besides the sheet.

I hosted a birthday party for my husband at the Inn. The party was wonderful, the setting, the food, the owners of the inn and their staff were superb! It was great fun then for many of the guests to be able to sleep over and we had breakfast together the next day. I cannot say enough about this gem in Pittsburgh. You will not be disappointed.

During our vacation trip to visit Pittsbugh, PA we had the good fortune to run across this fabulous bed and breakfast. It was built in the 1880's I believe, and the rooms were all elegant. The room we had was over the top roomy and so comfy. The owners Jeff and Karl went out of their way to accomodate us. Since we were traveling without a car, the owner graciously took us to a great brewery and pointed out what we should see and do. (Including an old fashioned ice cream parlor that dated by to 1923 that makes their own ice cream. ) They literally gave us their shirts off their backs to make our stay as perfect as possible. The front porch is a lovely place to sit as well is the elaborate back patio. The breakfast in the mornings was wonderful and it was the type of place where you actually felt like you were at home and free to wander wherever. \Our only regret is that we couldnt stay longer. Two snaps up Jeff and Karl - you two rock. Most sincerely, Jan and Danny Sacramento CA

  • Liked — How spacious room and bathroom were.
  • Disliked — That it wasn't free(ha ha).

After booking my stay several weeks ago, I got slightly apprehensive after reading the most recent negative reviews. But, my worries went for nothing. The Inn met and exceeded my initial expectations. Originally built in the late 1800's and restored in the 1990's, the Inn is charming, comfortable and has terrific character. It is furnished with a combination of period furniture and modern influences. Unlike the previous reviewers, we found the Inn to be clean and well maintained. The owners, Jeff and Karl, were very accomodating, gracious, and helpful. I also witnessed them going the extra step by driving out of town guests (who arrived without transportation) to area sights and restaurants. The restaurant located on site (Acanthus) is rated in the top 25 of Pittsburgh restaurants and is deserving of the recognition. My wife & I enjoyed a fabulous 7 course meal. The prices, while not cheap, were typical of other area upscale establishments we ate at and the food and service were outstanding. The only negative was the very basic continental breakfast. Fresh baked goods would be an improvenent here. True the bar area in the Inn was small, but if you want large stay at the Hilton. The intimate surroundings encouraged interaction and conversation with the other guests plus you could migate from the bar through the wonderful entry (complete with restored spiral staircase) into the front parlor or out unto the front porch. The Inn is located in the city and cities are unpredictable. If you are a city-phobic, stay somewhere else. If you like the activity in the city, stay here. The location is convienent to many attractions and we were not in the least bit hesitant about the area (we walked to/from PNC park at night). The Mexican War street neighborhood has some outstanding pre-1900 architecture, much of which is being retored. Pittsburgh is rich in attractions; we spent time at the Zoo, the Phipps botanical gardens, the Frick estate, the National Aviary, the Warhol museum, the Pirates at PNC park, Station Square, the Church Brewry, etc. In short, my next stay in Pittsburgh will include this Inn.

We had out of town guests staying the week-end of 6/16/2006 for a wedding and due to a lack of hotel space in Pittsburgh caused by the US Open, we booked them into this property. Unfortunately, we found the Inn to be more reminiscent of Disney's haunted mansion than a welcoming retreat in the city.

We arrived late on Saturday night to find an inner-city teen dance going on at the YMCA 2 doors away from the inn. Just as we pulled up in the car, a fight erupted at the dance and several dozen teens spilled into the street knocking over newspaper boxes an running amok until the police arrived to disperse the crowd - strike one.

Upon braving the tumult outside and entering the inn, we found a party in progress featuring a number on inebriated guests, including the owner. After realizing that real 'guests' had arrived, the staff quickly began to shoo the party-goers out, but this reception did not make our guests feel any more at ease - strike two.

Perhaps all that could be forgiven, but to add to the chaos, the accommodations just were not that nice. The rooms felt small and dated, the bed linens did not appear fresh and we were generally extremely disappointed with the overall quality.

There are much nicer places to stay in Pittsburgh, please learn from our mistake and avoid this inn.
