We stayed this hotel several times, mostly for convenience, as our daughter is studying at the University of Pittsburgh and her apartment is close to this Hampton Inn.
The hotel is busy at check-in/check-out time and the small lobby and plus the free breakfast in the morning attached to the lobby makes some annoyances, with all the bodies flying toward the coffee (one side of the lobby) and the food service (opposite side of the lobby). The parking lot (not free, $15) is also annoying, as the spaces are very small and difficult to maneuver. If you have a new car, I will counsel you to park your car across the street...though you will walk a little longer to the front lobby door, you could prevent 'pings' on your car's doors. The bad part is though the car prevention is a plus, you will not prevent the $15 parking fee.
The hotel is clean and, in most occasions, the desk help are polite. One occasion, when the Squirrel Hill Tunnel was in repairs and cars were lined up for hours, a desk help sent us to a great route home and save hours of frustration. If you are a Pitt/CMU parent, the hotel's clientele will mostly colleges' parents and you will find plenty of good conversation at the breakfast. The last booked room gave free newspapers, though in other occasions, they did not.
The price of the room is correlated to a home game. Away games' costs are almost half of a home game. On one occasion, I booked a room at the William Penn Hotel (nice hotel, by the way) and saved 75 bucks over this Hampton because....Pitt Football was home against U of VA.
The free breakfast is a plus, though the omelet was made of eggs, I think.
My take: book it for $130; for $240-$260, shop around.
