“Nice little pocket hotel though close to a sketchy neigborhood”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2014

Parking looks very limited at first, but there is a larger area controlled by the hotel that is just around the corner. Room was fine, though shower could use updating. Very comfortable bed. Breakfast was continental with a European tilt, and was excellent. Within walking distance of downtown though two blocks away the neigborhood looks a bit funky.

We stayed here for one night while in PIttsburgh to see a concert downtown. I chose the hotel primarily based on good reviews and price (it wasn't nearly as expensive as some of the hotels immediately downtown). My husband and I were very pleased with the experience. Parking was easy and nearby. We used the shuttle to go downtown for dinner the night we arrived, and he was great to talk to and had great advice about how to catch a cab back to the hotel after the concert (the concert ended after shuttle service closed for the evening. Our room was nicely arranged and very clean, although the bathroom area was small (although I feel that is somewhat to be expected in a historic hotel). The staff was incredibly friendly, and we even grabbed a vintage cocktail in the hotel bar before heading out to dinner. There was a wedding party staying there the night we were there and there was some noise in the courtyard later that night (we had a room facing the courtyard), but at least they wrapped up at a reasonable hour. Breakfast was nicely stocked and had great variety. I would definitely stay here again.

We came for the Pittsburgh 1/2 marathon and my daughter, son and I shared a queen room + roll away bed. It was quiet and the room had charm, although the bathroom was very small and in need of remodeling and better cleaning. Towels were old and need to be replaced. But all in all we would recommend this hotel!

Love at the counter was very helpful. The shuttle driver in the daytime was pleasant however the driver in the evening seemed annoyed at times. The walk to pnc is a bit scary however we didn't have any problems. The room was very small and the shower/bath area was the smAllest I was ever in. Parking was free. The breakfast was different. The fruit was good and fresh. Eggs were hard boiled with shells on. They had lunch meat which was dif but very good. Streets in pittsburgh are very narrow and lots of one way streets and all of them are very busy downtown. Take the free shuttle

We are very happy that this guest had an overall pleasant experience, and would be delighted to host him or her in the future. Regarding our neighborhood, Deutschtown, we would beg to differ with this guest's assessment. We have been open in our location since 1986, and are proud of our location in this historic area, located just across the river from downtown Pittsburgh. It's an area which has and is attracting a great deal of investment, including two brand new homes which were constructed at a collective cost of more than a million dollars just across the street from our back gate. Deutschtown boasts some of the most historically significant housing stock in the city, and also is home to many attractions and restaurants, including the Pittsburgh Children's Museum, Photo Antiquities Museum, and the New Hazlett Theater. It's also home to one of the largest and best respected research hospitals in the country, Allegheny General Hospital. We're proud to be part of the fabric of Deutschtown, and wholeheartedly endorse it to our guests.

Cute hotel, good price for the city, but on a sketchy street and not walkable. The shuttle was convenient. Some staff were friendly and helpful, others were far from that. Towels were dingy and smelled like cigarette smoke. Gross. Room cleaning so-so. I would not return to stay here again.

We are gratified that this guest has a positive experience with his or her stay. Regarding our neighborhood, Deutschtown, we are proud to be a part of the fabric of this great historic neighborhood, which is home to many attractions, including the New Hazlett Theater, Photo Antiquities Museum, Penn Brewery and Pittsburgh Children's Museum. It's name, Deutschtown, derives from the German, Swiss and Austrian immigrants who first populated the area in the mid 1800's (and who founded the buildings that our hotel and event facility occupy today -- the St. Mary's Priory and Church).

Very nice place, interesting historic architecture, in a convenient location within walking distance to downtown. I liked that the Priory has the option of small, lower-priced rooms for solo travelers. In a city that has no "budget" lodging anywhere near downtown, the single room option made this beautiful, centrally located hotel as affordable as a a lousy chain motel on the outskirts.

I had the absolute privilege of coming here for a long weekend with my family and in-laws, for a graduation, two weeks ago. The family reserved multiple rooms, and ours was on the 3rd floor. Our room was spacious and beautiful, including luxurious bath amenities. Our windows could open fully, which let in the wonderful breezy, white noise of the Pittsburgh local bridge at night. I loved the Continental breakfast, which reminded me of Europe. (The hotel book states it has a German-style breakfast). The fresh fruit, yogurt, coffee, small glasses of milk and juice, classic music, just wonderful!

The Staff, by day two, knew my sister-in-law and I, by name, and knew what we wanted. Especially during breakfast. "Jennifer! More eggs are in the kitchen!"

This is the place to go when you want to appreciate old school luxury, and with a touch of history. I snuck down to the in-hotel bar, on day (night) two, and was reminded of an Al Capone/Speakeasy type small bar, that just screams historical. People were there, laughing, and just waiting to be approached with a friendly "Hello". The hotel offers bottle service to go to your room, and has a large booklet of local restaurants in the area as well.

I thoroughly recommend this hotel. It's too good to pass up! This is truly an experience with class, history, and fun.

Room Tip: Stay in the main building.
