“Every road in Pittsburgh is under construction.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2011 via mobile

The DoubleTree by Hilton was an above average hotel that is currently crippled by a maze of construction. With no noticable signage posted in the direction you are forced to take by detours, we took two trips around the block before we found the entrance. Once checked in though, we found a comfortable, friendly hotel.
The room was a tight fit for an otherwise spacious room. It was wrapped around a utility closet, making an "L" shaped room that was narrow in all directions. Last but not least the bathroom was very small.

Thank you for sharing some of your experience from your stay with us. It has been quite a challenge the past several months to navigate the city with all of the road construction. PennDot has finally completed their project and all of the roads near this hotel have been opened back up to normal traffic patterns. I am confident that your next visit to Pittsburgh, should there be one, will be much more pleasant regarding traffic and directions. We would love to welcome you back to a warm Doubletree cookie.

Regards,

You know , this doubletree could be a lot more impressive. It honestly needs to find a target audience and address it accordingly.
We stayed at the doubletree for a Steelers game, but obviously wanted to do some tourism things as well. This doubletree is about 3-4 blocks away from where you really want to be, although they have a shuttle, it can't accommodate everyone in the hotel, and that is understandable. But the location of this hotel doesn't really allow cabs to come by on even an infrequent basis.
The hotel staff is friendly, but the rooms are very dated, and the feel of the hotel is one of a restructured retirement home. And if you really look at it , it does look like one.
For the price I would suggest just staying at the William Penn house which is a bit closer to everything and much nicer.
I travel every single week and typically stay in Hilton properties, diamond, but wouldn't consider staying here again, even if free. The fridge did not work, there was no safe, our room had a horrible smell, the bed was maybe a twin size, the bathroom was hard to turn around in (and I had a suite)
If you look at my tripadvisor profile, you can tell I don't leave negative reviews much, so I am not just nagging on this hotel, it definitely has legitimate concerns.

We appreciate you posting a review on Trip Advisor. Although this building is, like many in Pittsburgh, an older structure, we are very excited to announce that we have begun a complete rooms renovation at our property. Photos and information are available on our website. If your travels bring you back to Pittsburgh, we would love the opportunity to serve you again and hear what you think of our newly renovated rooms.

Sincerely,

Recently stayed at the DoubleTree Suites for 4 nights for a conference. The rooms are nicely appointed with adequate room. The front desk staff goes out of the way to help during the stay. Check in was quick and easy and the warm chocolate chip cookie was a treat. The shuttle was very convenient when you needed to be somewhere quickly or didn't want to walk. All we had to do was call to picked up and within minutes the shuttle arrived. The only downside of the hotel is there is still some smoking rooms and at times I would smell cigarette smoke in my room. I made the front desk aware of this and they were going to investigate the source of the problem. After December 1, 2011 the hotel will be totally non-smoking. This hotel is close to the convention center and the consol arena. I would return again.

Room Tip: Corner room on a higher floor.

Stayed here for two nights for a wedding. First thing you notice about the hotel is the horrible traffic situation just to get to the parking garage, we were right in front of the hotel, and it still took us 15 minutes to get in and this was at 2:00pm - I think the roads in Pittsburgh were designed by neanderthals because everywhere we went we had the same problem. Valet parking only, $20 per night. Ouch! No problems checking in, and the room was nice. Small but I would say that it met the Doubletree standard. The coffee machine kinda worked, but it had no outlet to plug into so we had to move the whole setup to the desk, weird.

Noise travels too well in the hotel. At around 1am, we were awakened by hotel staff doing something for about 30 minutes. Banging doors or something, and loud talking. Woke up the next morning to notice that the clock in the room is an hour behind! I tried to change it but it's one of those 'fancy' clocks and you can't change it. The king bed was very comfy.

Also, there were protesters (campers really) across the street which was unsightly.

Overall, its a fine hotel, and would have earned 4 stars from me, except for the very high price and minor annoyances. I would hope you could find a similar quality hotel for much less in this city.
