“decent hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2006

Hotel Positives:

1) Inexpensive accomodations and very close to downtown (2 miles away). I was able to get to PNC park and Heinz field in about 5 minutes (by car) during rush hour traffic.

2) The staff was friendly and helpful. I had trouble getting a cab one night and the lady at the front desk kept calling cab companies until she was finally able to get us one. She tried at it for an hour!

3) Cab fare was only $8-10 to the strip district where all the bars and clubs are.

4) The room was clean with all the proper ammenities. It also had a microwave and fridge which proved very helpful.

5) There is a continental breakfast, but if you don't get there by 9:30, all you'll get is coffee.

Hotel Negatives:

1) There isn't much around the hotel, so you have to look elsewhere for places to eat.

2) Although there is a subway station close by, it is only accessible by car. Moreover, parking around the station is hard to come. The station is in a terrible area as well. You are much better off driving to downtown (if you have a car) because its so close and parking is only $5-6. You would pay $4 for a round trip on the subway anyway.

Overall, this was a decent place. I was only in Pittsburgh for a weekend, so this hotel definately served its purpose. I would stay here again based on the hotels price and proximity to downtown.

  • Liked — Price and proximity to downtown Pittsburgh
  • Disliked — There aren't any good restaurants close by
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't take the subway, its much easier and quicker to drive downtown. Parking is cheap.

Dirt on the bed, floor, pillows, in the drawers, basically everywhere. Found chewed gum on the floor. Mold growing on the ceiling in the bathroom. Room 128. Went to complain, and the 'desk clerk' had only been there three days. He called the General Manager, who had him check the room, he agreed with us, and she still said she had to come in the next day to check the room and confirm the complaint. She said that I "probably" wouldn't be charged. Will never stay with any Days Inn again, as this is the third time we've had similar problems with the rooms.

...the Pink Champagne on Ice". Okay, there was no Pink Champagne and certainly not to plagarize the great song by the Eagles. But boy did this place ever remind me of the titular hotel of that song.

See, some of the rooms at this place are in the basement. And it's weird having the windows ABOVE your head--sort of like a "garden apartment." And yes, there was a mirror on the ceiling of my room. The whole set-up creeped me out and I asked to switch rooms after my first night there. The whole layout of this place is just strange.

This motel was once called the Viking Motel and was well known for the dances held there every Friday and Saturday in the 1980s and early 1990s. Days Inn is well-known for buying older hotels. Now I'm not saying that this is a bad place, but avoid the "Hotel California/Garden Apartment" rooms in the basement.

The Hotel is easy to find. Free Parking, large rooms with very cold AC.

The room I was in was nice. It was large, clean, and had a microwave and small firdge.

The breakfast that they advertise is nothing more than store bought muffins and coffee.
