Having visited many wine regions around the world there certainly have been times before that I found the wines not to my taste, as was the case at Mazza. They were generally lacking in varietal flavor, and one definately tasted oxidized. But usually the staff pouring the wine can at least explain their own wines reasonably well. In tasting 6 wines at Mazza in early June 2012 I casually asked the "vintage" of one of them. The staffer said that it was a 2012 vintage, which seemed unusual to me considering that leaves were just fully emerged on the vines outside. I asked again in a slightly different way and was told that "all our wines are 2012 vintages". This led to a discussion of where the grapes were grown, thinking that perhaps they had come from somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere. The staffer insisted that they were "local" but couldn't say whether they were from the Mazza vineyards, local farms, NY or PA, or any specific viticultural area. Having not enjoyed the wines and getting answers like that, we beat a hasty retreat.
