“poor service, good drinks”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2012

Black Horse Tavern has great drink specials and good food. However, we had a TERRIBLE experience with the bartender. If you go to the front bar (enter the side door and turn right) stay away from the short female bartender with a short brown ponytail and blonde highlights... she is NOT pleasant. It was 10:30 p.m. and she was acting like it was 2 a.m. and wanted to get out of there. Very nasty and unpleasant and actually cleared off/dumped out one of my friend's $13 martinis when she went to the bathroom...it was still half-full. When confronted, she denied it. All in all, this female bartender single-handedly ruined our experience at the Black Horse, but I think that's what she was aiming for.

“What a pleasant surprise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

My husband and I went there with my parents.....ages from 50s to 80s (but definitely would appeal to all ages.).....we dont live in newtown and are always trying to find someplace nice to take them when we viist. We were SOO pleasantly surprised.....nice assortment of wines by the glass......we had a few things from the "happy hour menu" and some from the regular entrees....all were tasty, and nicely presented. As several here have said, the owner stopped by to say hello....waitress was attentive and helpful.....atmosphere was warm and "tavern" like....and food was better than we had expected. I am sure we'll go back!

“The food as great and prices are reasonable. Service was good too.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2012 via mobile

We went on st. Pattys day and had a good experience. Food was good and reasonably priced. Service was good. The owner went out of his way to thank us for coming in to eat. Overall a good experience and we will definitely go back again.

“Worst dinner ever”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2012

Went for Valentine's dinner and had the worst experience in a restaurant ever. My wife ordered two different glasses of white wine. Mine came first but was served to my wife. Hers came 10 minutes later. The waitress kept calling the special soup clam bisque instead of crab. Restaurant was out of 3 menu items at 6:30PM. Were told the V day special menu was $50 per person. But if you added the items based on the regular menu price the total would be less than $50 so we ordered off the menu. Scallop and risotto dish was AWFUL. Smelled terrible. Scallops were rubbery. I think the food was spoiled so I sent it back. This is the first time I ever sent a meal back because it was unpalatable. Very disappointed in the restaurant because we enjoyed the front bar one Friday night and thought we found a new favorite. Never going back for food.
