I stayed at this hotel room with a friend when I visited PA to see Falling Water and Kentuck Knob.
Well - I felt safe inside my room. There was a regular lock and a latch lock. Both worked. And, of course, the card-key was needed to get in the room. You also need a card-key to enter the building from the back. I really appreciated this.
✓ Continental Breakfast!!
The really shouldn't be a big deal, but it isn't something that is included in all hotels. So I have to give them some credit for this. I'm not sure how clean or sanitary everything is, so you may not even feel comfortable eating this breakfast. They offered pastries and two types of cereal. There is milk in one pitcher and juice in another. Breakfast is held sometime between 6:30-9AM. I recommend getting your share before 8AM. Breakfast runs out pretty quickly.
✓ Staff was friendly.
I'm not sure if this guy was the manager or owner, but he was very friendly. He has great phone manners and seems eager to help. When you arrive, he makes sure that you know that he is willing to help with whatever issue you may have.
Depending on who you are, this could be considered a pro, con, or neutral. The TV is a tube TV. There are a fair number of channels. I would say about 30. There were a few news channels, the weather, Nickelodeon, TNT, Comedy Central, Disney Channel, and a few others. I wasn't there to watch TV so I didn't care too much about the limited selection of channels. I believe the website mentioned having HBO. I didn't notice any such channels.
✓ No bugs.
At least none that I could notice. Seeing any type of bug (with the possible exception of a house fly) immediately knocks out at least one star. I was pleased that there weren't any roaches.
✓ Non-smoking = Non-smoking
Rest assured. If you want a non-smoking room, that is what you will get. It may not be clean otherwise, but it will be smoke-free.
Are allowed! You can bring your dog. I heard someone else with their dog. It barked when I passed their door, but I didn't hear the dog when I went into my room.
✓ A/C, Heat
✓ Microwave, Refrigerator, oh my!
Yes, there is a microwave. There is also a refrigerator. Both worked. There are other amenities such as a hair blowdryer.
Were surprisingly comfortable! I was able to get a decent night of rest here. It also didn't hurt that I sprayed the bed with lysol an hour or so before I went to sleep!
- Empty Lobby. Where's the staff??
This surprised me since the primary person who answers the phone sounds very polite. I assumed that they would have fairly decent customer service. I'm not from PA and it took 4 hours to reach the hotel from home. My friend called the hotel and mentioned that we would be arriving around 9-9:30 to ensure that the room would still be there. When we arrived, no one was at the front desk! We rang the door bells, knocked, and made a LOT of noise. I shouted/screamed out, "HELLO?" far more times than I felt comfortable with. My friend and I heard giggling and voices down the hall by the front desk, so I shouted out, "WE NEED ASSISTANCE" and other things along those lines. We were there for 15 minutes. Nothing. I finally had the idea to call the same hotel. I heard the phone ringing and someone answered immediately. He came out a few seconds after from the same hallway I was directing my shouts. There should always be someone at the front desk.
- Hot Water.
I'm not sure if you would even feel comfortable using their shower. My friend sure wasn't. There is a shower mat inside the tub that may harbor a ton of germs. Still, if you are brave enough to take a shower you might find that it takes several minutes for the shower to become warm (not hot), and that this warm water loses its "heat" several minutes after. My experience was that it took close to 10 minutes for the water to become lukewarm, and it started cooling down about 5 minutes later. Although I considered this a minor annoyance, this shouldn't be an issue at all.
- Door Jam
There were times where the door that leads outside (toward the back of the hotel) was stuck and would not open. I was trying to get outside to go to my car and could not open the door! If this was an emergency, this could have had serious consequences.
- Toilet Issues
After flushing, the toilet kept running. We had to take the top off to manually fix it so that it would fill with water. GROSS. We had to do this several times during our one night stay because it just kept making noises. My friend finally fixed it. We did not call anyone to fix this since it was close to midnight and we're two young girls. Why would we want some stranger man to come in our room? Anyway, this was worth mentioning.
- Thin Walls
You can hear the people in the other rooms around you. I really value when hotel rooms have sound proof walls.
- Overall, Unimpressive
The room looked clean, but the carpet did not. I would NOT assume any 1, 2, or even some 3 star hotel to be clean. I actually brought lysol spray and sprayed the whole room! This means the bedsheets, pillow cases, sink, and shower. I get sick easily so I wasn't going to be foolish and assume that those were clean sheets. This made the night easier to enjoy.
BOTTOM LINE: This is certainly not a 5 or 4 star hotel. It's hard to believe that $50/night is considered "cheap" for a hotel room. I guess Las Vegas really spoiled me. There are certainly worse and sketchier hotels. My car was fine by the end of my stay, which was my main concern since the building and neighborhood looks very sketchy at night. I was not harassed during my stay and I felt safe in my room. Would I stay again? If I really had to.
I'm reluctant to give this any more than 2 stars because I don't think this should be considered an "average" hotel. But I suppose it's worth keeping in mind that there isn't much to see in that part of PA, so they probably don't get a lot of visitors. They probably would get their act together if they had more visitors.
