I love Kitsattheshore's review from July 28, 2012 it is right on. Gerenser's is in rough shape. My friends and I recently visited for breakfast and ice cream.
Breakfast we ordered from their menu, which seemed hard enough for the waitress who was trying her best to take orders for a large group of 6. The majority of us picked breakfast sandwiches with bagels, and found out they were out of bagels and got croissants instead. The food was average, fried egg/american cheese, but it took a really long time to make. Everyone we saw who worked at the restaurant was young, so I imagine that they aren't up to short order cook speed yet, but be warned, it could take a very long time before your food comes out.
The ice cream they had was very good. They allowed us to try them before selecting which ones we wanted to buy, and we all enjoyed our cones. They had some fun flavors to choose from.
The roof was infact leaking like Kitsattheshore mentioned, it was leaking in our purses, waters, orange juices, coffees, and on top of our heads. It was pretty gross to think about how many years that rood has been gathering mildew and other funk. The waitresses weren't very attentive to the problem, nor to coffee refills or new drinks.
This is the type of place you need to get up and look for your own silverware, coffee refills, and anything else you need. It is ran by teenagers like any old ice cream store, but if they are going to serve more they need to be more attentive. As far as the story of the visit, and kitschiness, I would rate it higher, but as far as food and food safety, I have to rate this experience as being poor.
