“A Good One”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2009

After reviewing the hotel choices and prices in the Lancaster area, we decided on the Mainstay Suites as we had stayed at this chain before and were pleased. Our smoking suite was very good....room large enough, a comfortable bed and sofa. Wired internet worked well. Breakfast was basic but did include a waffle maker. Next door is a miniature golf course and snack bar. There is an outdoor pool that we did not use as it was raining. You must drive to find a restaurant, but there are quite a few choices We had dinner at the Silver Springs Family Restaurant which was very popular and very good. The hotel price was good and we would stay here again.

Stayed here for one night while on a trip through southern Pennsylvania. Hotel is only a few miles west of Lancaster right off the freeway and less than an hour to York and Gettysburg. Rooms are really mini suites with full kitchen and sitting area and separate bed area. It was nice to have a big room and was much less priced than standard rooms at the the chain motels in Lancaster. Fast friendly check in and better than average continental breakfast made this a perfect stay.

We stayed here for 5 days. The suite was a bit small but it had a kitchen and sm living area. The supply room was well stocked with towels etc. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast bar was adequate. We enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

We spent 3 nights there as part of our Triple A package. We were there over a weekend, so maid service wasn't available. Guests have access to the supply closet to get their own clean linens and dump their own trash. Not really a problem, but if you're looking for service, this probably isn't for you.

Mainstay is an "Extended Stay" hotel, so each room has a kitchenette. Having a refrigerator was nice... but I don't think I would have been comfortable using the stove, as it needed a good cleaning.

Overall, the room was clean, and the bathroom was certainly acceptable, but you can tell the housekeeping staff gives it more of a "once over" instead of a thorough cleaning. The dust under the TV swivel base and on the A/C vents gave it away.

A continental breakfast is included. It's your basic, donuts, Lender's Bagels & cream cheese, cereal & make-your-own waffles. A bowl of mixed fruit from a jar or can was also available. The only protein offering was Smucker's peanut butter in the single serv/jelly style packaging. It would have been nice to have a yogurt or cottage cheese choice.

For the amount of time we spent in the room, I'd rate this an "it'll do."

  • Liked — Location was near Amish Country
  • Disliked — No weekend housekeeping service & room could have been cleaner

I stayed here with my boyfriend and my dog in Oct. for 5 days I also stayed here 2 years ago. (I am originally from the area and visit every couple of years). I like that they accept dogs. They have a separate grassy area where you can walk your dog. The rooms are nice and big enough for me (1 queen bed suite, included kitchen and sofa bed which I did not use). I liked the kitchen with refrigerator for leftovers and drinks. The room was pretty clean except for a few hairs on the bathroom floor and the shower curtain could use a cleaning. It didn't look bad but it had a moldy odor. The staff was nice and the continental breakfast was good as far as those type of breakfasts go (cereal, juice, coffee, muffins, bagels, waffles). One staff member was very attentive to the breakfast area to make sure things were filled. I really liked the waffles. The bed was not as comfortable as the first time I stayed there, they could use new mattresses at this point. They do not clean your room unless requested but that was fine with me. You can get supplies (towels, soap, etc) in a separate supply room when you need them. This works out fine except if you get greedy people that take too much.

It is a good location for the area, in between Lancaster and York, 10 to 15 minutes to Rt. 30 tourist area. I personally prefer to stay away from Rt. 30 area because of the congestion. It is a quiet area off of rt. 30. (I did not hear the traffic as other people have mentioned - my room was in the back area however).

Cannot comment about the pool, it was closed when I was there (out of season) and I don't go to that area to swim anyway (I live in Florida now - not a retired person though just for the record). It looked fine from what I saw.

Overall I would recommend this place - for the price and location it is a good deal. Better than just an overpriced regular size hotel room in a congested tourist area. I will stay there again when I return.

Pros’: Inexpensive – Clean – Very Friendly Staff – *Quiet – Decent Breakfast Buffet

Cons’: Beds - Location - *Noise

Not Rated: Pool – Never Used

Overall MainStay is a very clean efficient inexpensive hotel. Stayed there with family during a train festival week in September.

The property is over 20 minutes outside of Lancaster and Strasburg located off of highway 30.

The Hotel appears to cater to the overnight traveler types although there were other families staying there that weekend. We stayed four nights and had no issues with the staff, (they were fantastic).
The location is very quiet during the evenings yet depending on your room can be quit noisy at the same time. (See #2 complaint)

Internet access was fairly decent. (Being a Network Engineer has it’s perks. Don’t need to ask for assistance when you can’t connect).
The room overall was decent in size, kitchenette, living room seating and full size bedroom.

Note: To have such an inexpensive rate, the suite does not automatically have maid service; you must request it. On the weekends they do not have any so if you have garbage to throw out, your on your own.
However, we did have a cheerio accident in our room on a Saturday and the day manager was more than happy to get someone in our room to clean up the opps.

Twice had buffet breakfast, no fan fair yet better than most other places. Always had coffee and fruit throughout the day and evening.

The number 1 complaint were the beds. They badly need to be replaced. Even the pullout (which I have yet find a place that has a decent one), needed the mattress to be replaced. Sleeping was very uncomfortable.
The number 2 complaint was the location of the hotel, right next to hwy30. This artery is a main route for all vehicles coming and going out of York (aka Harley town), through Lancaster. We heard the traffic all night. The windows did nothing to dampen the noise from the traffic. We were on the side (1st floor) facing the highway so you may want to request the neighborhood side.

One benefit with staying outside of any major attraction is you won’t have any wait at any of the local restaurants.

One thing I did notice was I could not find any pictures of the rooms at this Mainstay on the internet, now you all have pics to look at. Hopefully these help in you decision making.

I will recommend MainStay as a “Plan-B” stay if you first overall pick is not available just due to its location. If you can handle the half hour drive back and forth to your destination in Lancaster or Strasburg, this is a great find.
