Tapei-Tokyo was recommended by my neice and sister as one of their favorite Asian restaurants; whenever I'm in Pittsburgh to visit, we'll take the family there as an alternative to the usual options preferred by my mother, who can only tolerate simple bland food.
The restaurant is located in one of the strip centers adjacent to the Monroeville Mall and, buried among the standalone chain restaurants, car dealerships and big boxes, can be a little hard to find. The interior of the restaurant is generic Asian - brass and glass dividers on top of half-walls, dark carpeting, cliche' artwork and furniture. A bar is located along one long wall; the sushi bar, with a Polynesian tiki theme, takes up the back wall. The restaurant is clean and nice - it's just not very exciting.
The menu has a little of everything Asian with the obligatory few American dishes. Chinese dominates, with a handful of Thai and Japanese (beyond the sushi) meals. The service here has always been very friendly, polite, knowledgable and attentive - this and the food more than compensates for the lack of decorating.
We ordered a variety of dishes - all were prepared and received well. I had asked for my shrimp in garlic sauce "extra spicy" and unfortunately it barely registered. I asked for hot chili oil to add to it, but this isn't the same as cooking the dish properly with chilis. I've seen this before in Chinese restaurants - where the cooks refuse to make the dish as spicy as its ordered. I have to assume this is due to people over-estimating their ability to handle the heat and then complaining. I wish more Asian places would adopt the rule of Thai and Indian restaurants: if you ask for it "Thai hot" or order the Vindaloo, you assume full responsibility for the heat.
Everyone enjoyed their meals and combined with the service and reasonable prices (the most expensive entrees - seafood - approach $25 but most are under $14), our most recent trip to Taipei-Tokyo was very enjoyable and appreciated.
Highly recommended as a great value, especially when a variety of cuisines is wanted!
