“Don't miss this, it is great!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

We wanted to raft with the Tidal Bore and chose The Shubenacadie Tidal Bore Rafting Park and Cottages. What a great choice! The rafting was fun and exciting. We were lucky to have a warm sunny day with extreme tides. I had never rafted before and am not too "outdoorsy" so I was a bit apprehensive. I felt very safe with our great captain. Others on the rafting excursion ranged from about 8 years old to 70. After rafting you can go mud sliding, tons of fun and very messy! They have hot showers for you to use after but we decided to take a cabin for the night and have our own shower. The cabins are new, clean and very attractive equipped with everything you need. The restaurant was very good, licensed and reasonably priced. We have never encountered a more friendly group of people as the owner and employees that work here. We planned on staying for one night and ended up staying three. Don't miss this great experience and super accommodations.

we didn't raft with them but we went for the lobster roll at the resturant When we got there the lobster wasn't ready so we had a burger. they gave us a discount since they didn't have the rolss As we were leaving a lady rushed out and said if we coudl wait 15 minutes we could get rolls

well worth the wait - we had them the next day at Peggy's cove!

Our group of 8 adults began our weeks vacation with the 2 hour rafting adventure. Our guide, Steve, was very informative, professional and fun. Luckily for us, it was a fine rafting day on the river too...it's nature - you get the day you get...we learned a great deal about the tides...ate lunch at the restaurant on the deck...it set the tone for our week.

Suggestions to newcomers: you will get soaked and muddy - wear old stuff nothing white...I can't imagine not doing the mudslide! It's soooo
Much fun! Old shoes too...relax and have a ball like we did! Thanks again, Steve!

We've lived near the Shubenacadie River for almost 25 years and never done the tidal bore rafting experience, so as an anniversary excursion for my wife and me, took my daughter and her boyfriend (early 20's) along with us. We booked online, without difficulty, and received a confirmation with accurate information about when and where to show up.

We had signed on for the four-hour tour, which allowed for a stop for mud-sliding (the kids got a kick out of it....I tried it for fun once...seriously alright, but not my thing, although others on the tour got downright primitive about it), and then a leisurely trip down the Shubenacadie River to a large sandbar where we waited a few minutes for the bore (the front of the incoming tide...a two-foot wave). I had always thought that the trip was to "surf the bore" but in fact, it is the cross currents of the incoming and outgoing tidal waters interacting with the river bottom that creates a series of standing waves that are quite exciting to traverse in the zodiacs. After two or three passes at each set of standing waves, they move up the river to the next set of standing waves, which appear and disappear within a few minutes, so it is also a matter of timing in order to enjoy the experience. We were also able to hop out of the raft to experience the speed of the current during one of the calmer stretches.

Our guide, Jacy, was knowledgeable about tidal flow, local lore, and natural habitats and wildlife, especially eagles (we saw 12 or 15 during our tour), and other local information. It was a great experience.

A friend and I used this company in September 2012. I have been waiting to cool down about the terrible experience since then but am still seething. After reading the review of a very similar experience to mine, I decided writing a review was the right thing to do. We had heard about the tidal bore for years and it was supposed to be one of the highlights of our trip on the day before going home. There had been several days of rain and the company we intended to use was not operating, we thought because it was late in the season. Tidal Bore Rafting was open and assured us the trip would be exciting. We did not really understand the tidal bore so thought that the location of this company might make a difference. We arrived an hour early for no good reason, desk people were indifferent but no big deal. Then we got on the raft and sat. And sat. And sat. After a few hours, the guide said the ripple that passed a while ago must have been the tidal bore. He said the only other time this had happened was THE DAY BEFORE. The guide was very chummy with one couple, but I had no interest in their chatter. He offered to stop for mud sliding, but we had a drive of several hours so were not interested in that but had to wait while the chummy couple tried it. My friend thought it was not a bad float trip as the water was pretty. But we paid $80 each for an exciting rafting trip. The company knew this was highly unlikely. I complained when we got off the boat, but did not receive even an offer of a t-shirt. Stick to the reputable companies in town.

The staff there were so accommodating! My husband and I stayed for our anniversary. They gave us a complimentary bottle of wine and a huge bag of Russel Stover chocolates. They allowed us to check in super early at no extra charge. We planned to go rafting but last minute changed our mind and they were really good about it!

It's set waaay back off the road, love that! The cottages are rustic but really nice, with a fire place! Great view. Comfortable sleep.

My only complaint was this: We went to the desk to ask when the restaurant would be open and were told that it would be open from 4pm to around 6:30pm. We also asked where the nearest store was to pick up some snacks, etc. We were directed to the Atlantic Superstore about 30 minutes away. We went to the store picked up our stuff and went back to the cottage. We got dressed for dinner and went to the restaurant. It wasn't open. We waited until 5pm, still not open. We went back to the desk and were told that their cook failed to show up for his shift and they would not be opening the restaurant. We were given directions back to the Superstore. We told the front desk agent we were disappointed, since we JUST got back from there plus it was our anniversary and we would like to eat at a restaurant. The agent called a local restaurant to make sure they were open and then told us it was about 5 - 10 minutes away. So we drove, and we drove. 25 minutes later we arrived at the restaurant, where there was live entertainment and a $5 per person cover charge!

The cottages are rustic but passable. The guide was not customer service oriented. He kept slamming the boat into the waves to make it bumpier than it was, which was unpleasant. Cut and bruised myself. He also filled the boat up to the top with water, which was unnecessary and unpleasant. Front desk is run by young kids--not well attended.
