My boyfriend and I had just spent three nights at Cove Haven and we really just didn't want our holiday to end. We decided that after stopping home to feed and water the cats in NJ, we would head out again for another night - but instead of going back to Cove Haven, we decided to try Pocono Palace, which had a room called the Fantasy Apple that looked really pretty. We specifically chose PP because we wanted to stay in that room, which had a lovely view of the lake. You can read my review of Cove Haven - we had a really nice time although we did have some criticisms. However, Pocono Palace was a complete miss.
First Impression: Unlike at Cove Haven, our first impression of PP was actually very positive. the grounds are very attractive and nicely landscaped. However, everything else was downhill after that.
The Room: As soon as we moved in, we were assaulted by the most offensive racket outside our windows, which turned out to be a couple of guys on bulldozers chopping down trees and feeding them into a woodchipper. THe whole room was shaking and the noise was unbearable. we called the desk and asked them what was going on. they explained that they were cutting down trees, which would continue until 5pm and then would start up again the next morning. well, this was very upsetting, considering we were paying $472 for one night. They offered to move us to a Champagne Tower, but we explained that we had just stayed two nights in the CT in Cove Haven and had specifically come to PP because we wanted to stay in the Fantasy Apple. We also told them that we had just gone on a tour of the rooms before checking into our room and that the CT room we were shown smelled really bad and was very dank. I said we would be willing to move to a Roman Tower room, but they refused to give us one of those. Then we asked if they could give us a discount on the FA. They said they could take off $100. I suggested they give us the room for half price since the noise was practically unbearable. They suggested we go to one of the other resorts instead. This really annoyed me. we had just driven for almost two hours to come to this resort - no one had told us that they would be running bulldozers and woodchippers outside our window before we set off on our trip - and now they wanted us to get back in our car and drive another resort. Finally they agreed to reimburse us $150, but they definitely had an attitude about it and made us feel as though we were being unreasonable for asking for more of a discount. Keep in mind that this was a Sunday night and the resort was nowhere near fully booked.
Dinner: Unlike Cove Haven, the food was only mediocre and the waitstaff was not nearly as impressive. For example, at cove haven, we had a choice of four entrees, while at PP there was just a bar with some different roasted meats they would cut for you and a few sides (such as mac and cheese). For dessert, at CH, they offered at least 8 different cakes and pies as well as an ice cream sunday bar. At PP, there were maybe one or two cakes and an ice cream sunday bar. We chose the ice cream bar, but the ice cream was terrible.
Breakfast: We wanted to get an early start on the day so we showed up at the dining room at 8:30 - when breakfast was scheduled to start. We waited at the entrance for around ten minutes while the wait staff ignored us, even though it was clear we were waiting to be seated. Finally, as one waitress walked past us a fourth time without stopping, I said "excuse me. should we just seat ourselves. we were wondering because we've been waiting for about 10 minutes and we're not sure what to do." she said, "breakfast starts at 8:30. someone will seat you." Then she walked off. Considering it was now 8:40, this seemed to be an inappropriate response. I don't mind waiting, but I would appreciate a "sorry for the delay. thanks for your patience. we'll be right there with you." For the prices they are charging, I expect a decent level of service. But what really annoyed us was that when the Hostess finally did come out and seat us, it was clear that she had an attitude towards us and was quite rude. Again, I don't care that she was late, but I do resent that she was rude to me because I was on time and she wasn't.
Amenities: What a joke. There was ONE raquet ball court. There were no indoor tennis courts so if it's raining, you're out of luck. The pool was tiny and smelled musty. In the game room, there were around eight pool tables, but only around 6 pool cues. A lot of the guests wanted to play pool, but there were never enough cues to go around so we kept having to share pool cues. it was ridiculous for a place that charges so much money not even to have enough pool cues for all the guests. The miniature golf course was the lamest thing I've ever seen. I mentioned in my Cove Haven review that the miniature golf course was pretty low end, but compared with PP's course, that one was palatial.
Overall, the experience was a huge disappointment, especially after we had such a nice time at Cove Haven. The most disappointing thing was that we were clearly labeled troublemakers by the staff and instead of them trying to make our stay pleasant (particularly to make up for the awful experience with the room) they treated us like pariahs. I would never go back here again.
