“Bad ownership-showed no concern over reasonable complaint”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2010

We went to the inn for a special event....Paranormal Night where ghost hunters were going to share their findings and two psychics would give random readings. What they didn't tell us was that the entire event would occur in the main dining area and that four unfortunate tables (ours) were in a totally different room with no view of what was happening. They had a bad speaker system in our room and that was the only way we knew what was happening. Psychics were giving readings and we couldn't see who was getting them, their answers to the questions or anything. They never even sent a psychic to our room..., it was as if we weren't even there. Some people in our group drove over an hour and a half. We all complained and not once did management apologize. Imagine going to a football game, being put in a small room with audio only. Not too nice. The owners wanted to find a way to book the whole restaurant and really mislead all of us in the small room.

Have never lodged here, but am a repeat customer and it is because of a great atmosphere, and wonderful food. The staff is always happy to serve you, and they are greatful for your business. The food is delicious, and the owners are involved in all aspects of making sure your visit is a good one.

Historic sure, but that is not an excuse for a providing lodging in rooms that are not clean. Dusty, dirty, dingy, filthy, I was glad I brought my own sheets and pillow "just in case" because what was provided was old and smelly and who knows when the bedspread was last washed. Disgusting. Carpeting was also in bad shape, don't walk on it in bare feet. Tiny bathroom and even smaller shower. My room was in the front of the building and turns out this place is right on a busy road so sound of trucks and other traffic driving past, along with their headlights made for a poor night's rest. Floor was not level and was more at a slant, must be part of the historical charm.

This rustic inn is also a tavern and restaurant. Built in the 1700’s,
the eclectic building has a fabulous history. Unfortunately, this is where fabulous begins and ends.

Saturday Night Experience: I partook of the crab cake dinner. The broccoli was gray and decomposing. The two crab cakes were soggy balls of crabmeat laced with Old Bay seasoning. My husband had the wings. The wings were ok but the blue cheese was sour. Even though the place was mobbed busy, the service was friendly.

The hotel told us Farmers Hope was the only place that served food late on a Sunday, so we ended up eating there a second time.

Sunday Night Experience: Night two offered the same Parmesan Crusted Tilapia special as the evening before. I wondered how many nights they had been trying to get rid of that fish. Our drinks came quickly
then we were forgotten. Placing our order became an exercise in patience, then a series of “excuse me please,” then the last resort…frantic hand waving. Finally the host noticed us and sent over the waitress. She apologized profusely then brought out a basket of salsa
and chips on the house. The chips were fresh and the salsa was ok. Recalling the previous night’s dubious fare, we decided to keep our choices simple and order burgers. How can anyone mess up a burger? This line of thought still holds. The pan-fried burgers were thick and juicy and done to request. It was nice to get a burger done to a medium rare while so many other places only cook to medium well. The lettuce and tomato was fresh and crisp. Then again, isn’t that what a decent burger is supposed to be like? The slightly soggy fries were
fresh cut with the skins on. While enjoying an after dinner cigarette
in the smoking section (a rare treat for a New York resident) the host asked my husband to extinguish his cigarette. Yes, it’s true. He
was asked not to smoke a cigarette in the smoking section. I suppose Djarum isn’t to the host’s liking.

Summary: A historically rustic atmosphere doesn’t make up for slow-to-nonexistent service, hit-n-miss attitude and adequate-to-bad food. Taking both nights into consideration, I give this restaurant an overall grade of D+ or 1-1/2 stars.
