Owner description: The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, established in 1861, is the first commercial pretzel bakery in America. As of August 2007, the site is under new ownership. The bakery and store have been completely renovated and are now operated once again by the Sturgis family. Visitors can tour the original pretzel bakery, see soft pretzels being made by hand, and find pretzels baked by the oldest pretzel baking family in the United States.

“Great spot for kids and adults.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2011

This is a historical tour. You are not touring a working factory. You see the old brick ovens, actually roll a pretzel (with dough - kids loved it!) and hear about how the first pretzel bakery came to be. Very intersting tour. Price is perfect. $3 for the tour, I think. Attraction is right in the town of Lititz. Looks like a nice walking town with restaurants and cute stores. We didn't have time to enjoy the town, but if you have extra time to kill, you could easily take a walk in the area

“Yummy!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2011

For $3 you get to make your own pretzel and become a certified pretzel maker. It's great fun for the kids.

“Rainy Day”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2011

The staff at the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery is kind and very passionate. Our tour guide was funny and really cared about what he was doing. The pretzel twisting was fun, but you don't get your pretzel at the end. You do get a little bag of pretzels, and the food in the shop is affordable and very good. Definitely good on a rainy day in Lancaster when there really isn't much else to do.

“great spot for a quick tour and yummy pretzels!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2011

While you're in the area, this is a great little stop with a bit of history. It is inexpensive, and the tour is fun. You learn about the history of the company, the pretzel, and get to roll your own pretzels, which is especially fun for little kids. At the end, be sure to visit the shop, where you can buy fresh pretzels and other Sturgis goodies.

“Hands on History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2011

I took out of town friends to the bakery. I had taken my own kids several years ago and it was awful. However, the ownership is back in the hands of the Sturgis family. The tour price is now minimal and the tour itself is greatly improved. Our adult guide was knowlegable and enthusiastic. The interesting tour includes a hands-on pretzel twisting lesson, the story behind the birth of the hard pretzel, how pretzels were and are now made with a treat at the end. This is an easy walk from Wilber Chocolate down a cute Lititz street with nice shops. The price is reasonable at $3 for an adult. Well worth the time and money.
