“Elegance without pretension”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

We live roughly 200 miles away from this establishment, but we visit the Laurel Highlands area approximately twice a year. We found Chef Dato's website while searching for a new restaurant to try. The promise of some delicious-tasting offerings on the menu were enough to make us divert from our usual route to head there for lunch.

Others have criticized the "atmosphere", but we found it charming and elegant in its own fashion. I suppose if the critics prefer more luxury trappings, they would then complain about the increase in the price of the dishes – which would become necessary to PAY for the "atmosphere". Small books – filled with patrons' comments – adorn each table, which make for interesting reading while you wait for your meal.

We started with the Crispy Provolone Cheese Wedges, which were large, tasty and crispy (as advertised!); they definitely were NOT greasy or oily, as such fried foods are wont. The entrées were beautifully presented, as well as extremely generous. The Broiled Cod with Buttery Crumb Topping makes other establishments' fish portions just look like bait. The impressive piece of cod was perfectly flaky and buttery, and the accompanying julienned vegetables and saffron basmati rice complemented the dish.

The Butternut Squash Ravioli was, in a word, superb. I would have gladly given the kitchen another 10-spot just to add a few more of them onto the plate – that's how delicious and near-addicting they were. The hazelnut liqueur cream sauce was inspired and paired well with the butternut squash, and the feta cheese and pepitas were a pleasant and unexpected taste delight. For those of you who relish "mouthfeel" in your dining experience, this dish will not disappoint.

Dessert was crème brûlée, which had a lovely creamy, vanilla-y silken custard beneath the crunchy sugar top. It was a wonderful finish.

If you're traveling in the area, you would do yourself a great favor by stopping in Chef Dato's for a truly delicious - and reasonably-priced! - meal. We are readjusting our future travel plans to accomodate a visit to Chef Dato's.

“Nice overall experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

Nice overall experience.
Friendly staff with good product knowledge (beer and food).
Great selection of imported beers.
We ordered what our waitress suggested for entrees and beer and were very satisfied.
The Russian beer and German Schnitzel were very good.
The portion sizes were very generous.
Their desserts are outrageous in taste and size.
Nice country drive and dinner.
Recommended for casual evening.

“Varied Fun Menu Offerings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

The only big problem we had here was what to choose for dinner--the menu is so varied! My husband had weiner schnitzel and I had steak tips--both were top drawer. Service was professional and the surroundings were lovely--sat in the beer garden. We live so far away, but would go again if ever in neighborhood--

“Chefs don't used canned meat!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

My husband and I have eaten at this restaurant many times. Generally the service was average but the food was always top notch which made up for the service. On our last visit the tables were turned. The service was very good however, the meal my husband ordered contained canned chicken. He has ordered this meal in the past and the chicken was always grilled. Very disappointing!

“Enjoyed the outdoor seating”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

I've been here before and just had an appetizer at the bar, but this time we sat out on the patio and enjoyed it very much. They have a great selection of beers from all over the world. I don't know anywhere else around where you can get a 1 liter MUG of German beer, but you can here.

The food was excellent as well- I had Thai shrimp and I tried the maple salmon and it was very good as well.

The service was very good- we weren't it a hurry and probably overstayed a bit, but there was no problem
