Spent one night at the Lancaster Host this past weekend, and it was not the top notch experience that I have had in past years. The hotel is still in the middle of a major renovation, as it has been for the past two years. I was booked into room 226 which has been remodeled within the past month. The room was very nice with new carpet, new wallpaper, new spreads on the beds, new curtains, etc. The room was very clean and well kept. I had requested a ground level room near the outdoor pool and for the first time in three years, I actually got it.
It appears that in order to pay for the renovations, they are cutting staff and services. First, the hotel only had one lifeguard on duty covering both pools (indoor and outdoor). The lifeguard was constantly walking from the indoor pool to the outdoor pool while trying also to man the "pool hut" where you can get things such as kick boards and water noodles for the kids to play with. While useage of the two pools was light on the day that I was there, I would expect at least one lifeguard per pool, not one for two pools. Furthermore, the sign on the wall of the indoor pool said that they keep the indoor pool water at 80 degrees all year. When I jumped into that pool, I found out quickly that the sign was not telling the truth. The water in the pool could not have been more than 65 degrees, it was frigid. In past years the water has been very warm and comfortable, but the renovations must have cost too much and they have cut back on the pool heating costs.
When I booked my room several weeks ago, the Lancaster Host website said that a free continental breakfast was included with each room. This has been during all of my past stays. The breakfast included muffins, rolls, pastries, juices and coffee in past years, they called it their "grab and go" breakfast. It appears that the management has grabbed the included breakfast and gone with it. When my children and I went to the lobby to retrieve our promised grab and go breakfast, we found one pot of coffee. No rolls, no pastries, no food. I looked around for someone to ask, but all of the staff was too busy to answer a question because there was very little staff. When I went back to the room with only coffee, my wife went to the lobby to inquire as to what happened to the breakfast we were promised. She was told that sometimes they put it out, but they had not put it out that morning. The desk clerk then told my wife that she could get her some muffins if my wife wanted. When my wife said yes, the clerk returned with four muffins and a bill for eight dollars. My wife tried to reason with the desk clerk, but she would not bend on the eight dollars. As we had three starving children, she paid the eight dollars for the muffins.
I checked out the Lancaster Host website when I returned from my stay and they have removed breakfast from the list of amnities that is included with the room. I guess all of the new wallpaper cost so much they could not provided their guests with a couple of muffins anymore.
The Lancaster Host Resort is not cheap. The rates have gone up from $60 per night three years ago to $100 per night this past weekend. While the facility is nice, you can go to other hotels in the area with equally nice facilities with better service and better included amenities. The one great draw for my family and I are the two pools at the hotel. While these pools are nice, there are other comparably priced hotels in the area that have pools.
My advice would be to look at other hotels and resorts in Lancaster before booking at the Lancaster Host Resort. I am sure that you will find other hotels a much better value than this one.
