Description: During renovations, workers found in the floor beams a signed inspection stamp--November 5, 1890--with the name of tobacco inspector John J. Jeffries. We named the restaurant after him. We’ve designed our menu based on local, seasonal, sustainable and organic agriculture and delicious recipes. Please join us and taste the difference of local farm-to-table sustainable cuisine in one of Lancaster's best fine dining restaurants. As the Chefs and Owners of John J Jeffries, we believe you will find our passion for supporting local businesses and preserving the land we live on, to be contagiously obvious in how we run our restaurant. All of our meats are raised locally, confinement-free on fresh green grass pastures. No hormones, antibiotics, steroids or forced-fertilization occurs. Our produce is local organic or chemical free. We use local grass fed cream, butter and eggs. We also provide sustainable seafood and support sustainable fisheries.

“Best meal in a while!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

We had been to JJJ several years ago, and had been singularly unimpressed. At that time, we thought the food was very ordinary and uninspiring, and therefore not worth cost. Armed with a gift certificate, we ventured there again, and it was a great decision on our part.

We found the restaurant very inviting, and the service impeccable. Our server, Nga, was very attentive and knowledgable. She carefully explained the menu, and during the course of our dinner was visible without being intrusive. She had such an air of confidence about her that I let her choose my meal. She chose the salmon ceviche and the black cod, and she was absolutely right on with her selections; both were delicious. My wife had the potato soup and the salmon entree, and she raved about both. It was a real pleasure to sample the creative combinations that appeared on our various plates.

Our evening at JJJ was a wonderful end to a busy week. We'll be back again, and we will definitely recommend this restaurant to our friends.

“Better than average, but not very good either, so Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

Went to JJJ for a business dinner. Service was top notch and the atmosphere very good, the food better than average, but I was expecting better. I had soup and two small plates; the steak tartare and the 4 cheese plate. Good taste and was happy with my selections. One business associate had the grilled chicken, that too was good. But the third individual had the NY strip steak, which was about a third fat. His bread plate was stacked with fat pieces that he struggled to cut off. Desert was the perfect size for the closing sweet taste, but not a 3,000 calorie over do.

“Solid meal at JJJ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

We visited JJJ on a Friday night in March for dinner. The service was top notch and our waitress was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere of the restaurant is relaxed and it seemed to have an active bar crowd. The restaurant is fairly removed from the bar and is very quiet. We opted to order small plates instead of individual meals. This was a great way to sample many things on the menu. We ordered: Crispy pork belly love (really loved the pork belly with the sweetness of the strawberry puree), Smoked Gouda Yukon Potato Soup (this was one of our top dishes), Shanker tacos (Good idea and tasty, but felt that the parsley slaw didn't quite meld with this dish), Dry Aged Steak Tartare with Scallop (wow! - get this dish!), Shrimp and Grits ( this is a must - they nailed it!), and Fingerling Potatoes (this was a take it or leave it dish for me). We would return to this establishment in the future and recommend it to friends and family.

“BEST food ever!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

My husband and I have lived in Lancaster city for the past 14 years, and have been going to John J Jeffries since they opened 7 years ago. We go to JJJ for birthdays, anniversaries, and everything in between. It is hands-down the best restaurant in Lancaster. In fact, having tried “farm-to-table” restaurants in some larger cities on the East coast, we have found JJJ always remains our favorite.

The delicious carrot mini-muffins with local butter and the fresh and beautiful seasonal salads set the stage for an awesome dinner. Once you get to the entrée course, the chefs’ creativity and talent shine through. On our most recent visit, my husband had the mini tacos and chicken entrée and I had the seasonal salad and vegetarian dosas. As with every other visit, we were completely blown away by our food. You can't get this level of quality and freshness anywhere else! We also love that this is food with a conscience; living in Lancaster County, it seems silly that one would settle for anything less than local, seasonal, sustainable food.

After reading a previous review, I felt compelled to set the record straight. First, a crowded restaurant typically indicates a successful restaurant; never mind that what was described was the host station/bar area and not the dining room. Which takes me to my next point – an exaggerated, sarcastic review proves neither accurate nor helpful. For this type of reviewer, I recommend sticking with the predictability of a chain restaurant with bright lights, white bread, mass produced food from god-knows-where, and people who look and sound just like you.

For the remaining 99% who appreciate unique, fresh, local, and delicious food, I can’t recommend JJJ highly enough!
