This is a great December Christmas experience! We visited on a weekday evening in mid-December with a timed ticket for admission at 8:00 pm. (You can purchase them ahead of time online…recommended. The gardens closes at 10:00) There were no crowds and we entered a little early with no difficulty. Parking up close was also easy.
The holiday light displays are outstanding both inside the conservatory and on the grounds. Many of the large trees are beautifully decorated and illuminated as are the fountains. Inside, we especially enjoyed the period decorated rooms and the floating apples display in the center court. Get a glimpse of the decorated Christmas trees by local school students - a highlight each year. The outside train garden is also highly recommended.
One caution is that the restaurant closes earlier than the rest of the gardens and conservatory.
