“Fabulous views!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2011

This is the fourth time we've stayed at the Lantern Apartments during Summer. We keep coming back because of the awesome views and the comfortable apartments. We always stay in an apartment one storey down from the top. We get our own balcony off the lounge room where we enjoy eating our breakfast and dinner (too busy walking during the day to eat there for lunch!). If you are sharing with other couples/families, I would stay a level below us where you get a large balcony to share with the neigbouring units. The bathroom is miniscule but we enjoyed the space in the bedroom. The managers told us that some of the apartments have been renovated. We stayed in an unrenovated one. It was comfortable, but its time for a makeover.
We took our own food and cooked our meals each night. It took a while to get used to the stove - either very hot or only luke warm!

There are a number of steps from the village to the apartments but it didn't bother us. After all, Thredbo in summer is all about activities and especially walking in the mountains. So a few hundred steps to the apartments is nothing that concerned us. Parking is a problem and if you can, get an apartment that comes with a car space. Free wifi was available which we appreciated.

The managers are very hospitable. They went out of their way to help us with whatever we needed. A special thanks to Ian for the friendly and professional manner when we needed it :)

Stayed here for almost a week Christmas 2010. Fantastic views of Mt Crackenback. Recommend a one bedroom apartment, we had a loft apartment, but it was very HOT in the loft (sounds odd huh!) - almost unable to sleep up there. Tiny balcony with loft apartment, lower apartments have access to shared balconies with bbq's - prob a better idea. Steps, steps and steps - be aware of this. No roasting pan in the kitchen, made for an interesting tack on roast chicken for Christmas day! Bathroom and laundry are one tiny room - I mean tiny! Thredbo is great for summer walking - Lantern is located at the top of Thredbo, so you will do a lot of walking. Not onerous though. If staying at Lantern, try to ensure you get a carpark, parking in the remainder of the village is very problematic - just not enough spaces. Did our food shopping in Cooma on the way down from Canberra - better prices than Jindabyne. Village supermarket is limited and really only for unexpected needs. Golf is a must - be sure you have a load of golf balls - they will go missing and they are very hard to find!! . Look at the value of purchasing 'Resort passes' for two days or more - this will give you value for money for lift etc.

Thanks for your feedback on your stay in Summer. It sounds as though you were in Unit 32. This apartment was renovated a couple of years ago and they built the loft in then. At that time they planned to put a skylight in similar to the other loft apartments. These skylights are great for ventilation and keep the air flowing through. There have been issues with getting building approval for the skylight in 32 due to changes in bush fire safety regulations. We should have a portable airconditioner in the loft for this summer. There are really only one or 2 weeks a year when we get that sort of weather, usually it is pretty pleasant, if not a little brusque.

It is a shame you didn't ask about a replacement baking tray. We are on site every day and have a stock of spares for that sort of thing. I hope you managed to enjoy your christmas anyway.

Stairs are part of life in our part of Thredbo but I have to say that without my daily walk to the Post office from the Lantern, I would be a larger man, I just look at it as free excercise and a chance to suck in some of of that clean mountain air! And after you have climbed those stairs you do get the views!

The resort passes are always worth looking at for the summer season. This year Thredbo is offering KIds free resort activity passes with each paying adult so it is great value for families.

Thank you so much for you feed back are working on the ventilation in the loft for that apartment and you feed back is very much appreciated.

Regards,

Ian Foster

If you want to see real snow go to New Zealand.Went to thredbo in the first week of school holidays.Only snowed one day over night.Queues for everything during the hoildays. Thredbo is over crowded and over charged in everything from restaurants to ski hire and lift hire.Stayed at the lantern which is located at the top of the mountain near the alpine way.One bed room apartment was comfortable and warm.Bathroom was the size of a telephone booth. No parking so had to walk a distance to public car park. Apartment is a long walk from snow fields so took courtesy buses which were frequent but crowded in morning and afternoon peak times.Lantern has a great view of the snow fields but its height means a lot of stairs to the village.Thin walls meant the Pearl Jam fans in the unit door kept you awake.
Would I stay there again....to lose weight walking up those stairs from the village.

This place was all right, we'd stay there again but it didn't wow us (for the price anyway). The biggest plus is that the owner was very friendly and helpful and had lots of advice. The building is obviously a bit old (e.g. cracks in the walls) and some of the furniture was worn, but the kitchen and bathroom looked like they'd been recently renovated. There was wifi in the room which we appreciated, and a nice big flatscreen tv. There were no major issues with the room, but there wasn't much service, i.e. no room cleaning during our stay, and we had to empty our trash/recycling ourselves. As others have mentioned it is at the top of the village, from the bottom it is about 4-5 flights of stairs... but all of Thredbo Village in on a hill so many places will have a bit of a climb. Since we stayed in April the price was reasonable (about a third of the high season price)--it's a decent place but if I think if you paid the full price you'd probably be disappointed.

Our second time staying here in summer (we are not skiers) and probably the last:

Pros: awesome views of the mountain – simply spectacular for both sunsets and early morning.
Adequate parking underneath the building for our quite large truck, but you have to go up stairs and outside to get to the apartment which is up more stairs. No lift. Not a big deal for us but some may find it problematic.
Good size room – ours was a 1brm with separate lounge/kitchen and balcony.
Quiet: good location if you like to be away from noise and bustle, but in summer there isn’t any of this anyway so not really an issue.
Service: can’t fault the proprietor, he was very helpful and courteous.

Cons:
Decor: getting old and things break – cupboard doors fall off hinges, appliances are tired, bathroom poky and dark. Paint is falling off, rust all over balcony and everything grey and gloomy. Needs a big renovation but I doubt they will spend the money. I note one of the earlier reviews said the apartments had been renovated 2 years ago, but it didn’t look it to me. Must have been awful before that then.
Beds: good beds but simply horrid pillows. Got a bad neck and had to have an emergency massage next day in Canberra. Not happy.
It’s at the top of the village, so you have to walk down to everything and then walk back. It’s not an issue if you like exercise, but if your knees trouble you find somewhere lower down.

Probably won’t stay here again, we will find somewhere nicer next time.

We stayed in a one bedroom loft apartment which was lovely and clean and had spectacular views. The twin beds for the children were in the loft, which overlooked the living area, meaning the adults couldn't really watch TV after the kids were in bed. Not too much of a problem as we were tired from skiing anyway. The hotel is at the very top of the village - a long steep walk from the ski areas and restaurants etc. During the day there is a very efficient shuttle bus service but at night we often couldn't face the walk after going to a restaurant in the village. There were very good cooking facilities in our apartment and we chose to self cater most nights. Nice place, friendly staff, great if you want to self cater anyway. We would stay in the village itself next time although this would cost more. Good value for money if you don't mind being away from the main village area.

We stayed in a one-bedroom apartment with marvelous views of the mountains. Staff were friendly and helpful. Apartment is tastefully furnished and clean. There is also a sofa-bed in the living room which is very comfortable. Will definitely return.
