“Great zoo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Lovely zoo, getting up close with the animals. We were lucky to see a crocodile being trapped to be transported that day, very exciting for the whole family. Great experience with the koalas and other keeper talks.

“must visit when in the Shoalhaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

Great place to visit, situated right on the Shoalhaven river and basically this zoo is built out of the escarpment, quite spectacular. All the animals are there to see including crocodiles and exotic animals, reptiles , birds, some big birds like the Peacocks/peahens just roam around the place. All enclosures make everything real close to you. Live animal shows are terrific with the public allowed hands on with the animals. Quite reasonably charged to get in with plenty of tables and seats for a picnic lunch.

“Great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013 via mobile

We're so lucky to have a zoo in the Shoalhaven. This place has so much to offer, cool animals, beautiful setting, educational and fun. To top it off, the kids just love that huge slide. Keep up the great zoo, I'll be back for many more visits with the kids and hopefully grand kids in the future.

“Best hands-on zoo around”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

Shoalhaven Zoo is one of the very best things to do in this area - especially for kids or overseas visitors. It is extremely well priced, particularly the Annual Passes for locals ($88 for a family). It has a huge variety of animals, most of which are within patting and feeding range. We have been there 6+ times per year over the past 3 years and these are the highlights for us:

- The free-range kangaroo, wallaby and wallaroo enclosure contains 20+ or so very friendly and gentle animals who wander around the visitors and are happy to receive pats. There are also friendly (yes, true!) emus wandering around who are pattable and feedable.
- There are two fantastic adventure walks around the rocky cliffs rising up behind the zoo. Both are subtly signposted to give kids a great sense of adventure as the trails weave through caves and around massive sandstone monoliths in the cliffs. One of the walks (the 'Rainforest' walk) is genuinely hair-raising for kids, with ladders to climb up rocky cliffs, wonky bridges and mysterious caves.
- The goat / sheep / chicken enclosure contains a variety of friendly animals. The shop at the front of the Zoo sells bags of food for $1 which kids love to feed to the animals.
- The koala show is great; very informative about koalas generally and about the ones in the zoo. At the end of the show, everyone is allowed to hug and pat the koalas.
- The water buffalo are at the end of the zoo. They are very friendly (like everything at this place) and will come over for pats if you pick them handfuls of fresh green grass, which they seem to prefer to the rest of their diet.
- The crocodile show is well worth seeing. The intimate nature of this zoo means that everyone gets within 2 metres of the crocodiles throughout the show. Interesting as the crocodiles snap at meat. The zookeeper / presenter is wonderfully enthusiastic about the crocs which is infectious.

There are so many other fantastic things; the free range peacocks, the massive kids slide, the singing dingos, the reptile show, the baby wombats which wander around the place, the feedable llamas, the monkeys, the beautiful location on the Shoalhaven River.

If you've got a baby, take a sturdy stroller because the paths aren't always very well sealed or flat. Use the toilet near the zoo entrance because there are no facilities anywhere else. Wear strong shoes because there can be mud and potholes. Watch small children as there are nettles growing around the place at certain times of the year. There are BBQ facilities, but we have never used them. Plenty of quiet and picturesque spots for picnics along the river throughout the zoo. There is also a basic cafe at the zoo entrance with chips, burgers, ice creams, coffee etc.

We can't recommend this zoo highly enough. Wish this would be our 'local' zoo forever.
